Hello everybody welcome back uh I'm fresh back from watching a game my son play and some lovely conditions here in Spring and New England uh raining sideways and like 30 something degrees
nothing like spring soccer right uh today we're going to talk about offside the offside law uh specifically because in 7v7 this is probably the first time that offside is now going to be applied
in a game and so it's important for you as a coach to learn how it works uh how you can teach it to your players and perhaps more importantly teach it to
your parents so they're not screaming for offside when in fact it isn't it is at its heart a simple rule and yet there are so many exceptions and complications
to it that um it can take a little bit to get used to and even referees especially younger referees will get it wrong so we'll take a look at the law
we'll take a look at on the tactics board some examples along as with some slides and then we'll talk about how maybe you can go about working with your
team to get them to understand this law works as well okay so let's go so okay in 7v7 uh offside is law 11 of the 17 laws in the FIFA ifab rule book and
that's when it comes into play in some leagues it's determined by the buildout line um and the buildout line is a line that's there for players um so that they
are restrained on goal kicks from having to deal with pressure right away we've talked about this before we'll talk about it again when we look at playing
out of the back specifically but the build out line is usually um halfway from where the penalty spot would be which is about 10 yards from the goal
and the halfway line as you can see on the slide we're going to look at the traditional method of offside that uses the halfway line but just know that if
your league does use the buildout line a lot of times they use that line as the DeMark point for where offside can and cannot be called just check with your
local rules and go from there so so I like to say offside is simple but yet tricky to understand there's actually a document there's a Illustrated document for referees called
easy offside for referees and it's 13 pages long so again it can be complicated for folks now in theory it's very simple if on the half of the field
furthest from your net so the attacking half at the moment the ball is played so as soon as it's kicked the moment it's a player on your team is in front of the
ball and past the second to last player the opposition closest to the opponent's goal and touches the ball or interferes with the play in a meaningful way and
that's where it starts to get tricky then and only then is the whistle blown and is an indirect free kick for the opposite team because your player is
offside now you cannot be judged to be offside decide if you are in your half of the field when the ball is kicked or you received the ball directly from a
throwin from a goal kick from a corner kick or the other team who has deliberately played the ball and your player who was standing in an offside
position gains possession now you can have a player stand in an offside position all game long but as long as they do not interfere with the play
the referee does not and will not blow the whistle so stop yelling at the refs to call offside I was refereeing a game I had a player who was kind of just for
some reason standing kind of near the corner flag he was a little confused what was going on the player was halfway up the field and the opposing bench was
screaming at me to call offside because the player was standing in an offside position the play was 50 yards away from the player diagonally across the field I
was like guys you better go learn to rle book that player can stand there all game long if he gets the ball and he's still in an offside position I'll blow
the whistle if he interferes would play when the ball goes that direction from an offside position I'll blow the whistle but until then he can stand wherever the heck he wants he's just not
going to be part of the play so please learn your rules don't be those coaches on the sidelines screaming at the refs when you don't know what's going on
we're going to fix that right now okay so we're going to use the Whiteboard and look at some examples on the tactic board all right let's go look at that if
when the moment the ball is kicked this player is on this half of the field offside may be part of the rule if the player is on this
side they can never be offside at the moment this ball is kicked if they're starting here they can run anywhere they want but at the moment this Ball's
kicked if they're on this side of the off side of the field they cannot be offside second a player on your team they have to either in front of the
ball and have to be in front of the second to last player so one player two player keeper Defender doesn't always have to be the keeper what happens if
the keeper comes up and this defender's there this is the second to last Defender now right so ball played here two players second last on side no offside issue at
all if this player is here and the ball at the moment this ball is played they are not behind the second to last Defender therefore they are in an
offside position if there were ARS the flag would be raised but here in 7v7 there's almost never ARS so this would be offside the rough would blow the
whistle if at the moment the ball is kicked this player is level with this player and and if they had ARS they actually the arms don't count it's
anything you could score a goal with is what they count it with so that's Head Shoulders chest knees legs anything but the arms but again you're not going to
have such close off sides here because there's no AR running up and down the sideline looking across the field is going to be your Center ref that's
looking at this if they are level and in the moment this ball is kicked this player starts running and runs behind this player that is not offside because when the moment the ball
was kicked this player was level with the second to last Defender and this is where the timing of passes is crucial and the timing of runs is crucial those
are things that you're going to work on in your practices and it's things that especially work on over and over and over again because it is an art form in
some regards to get very good at it but again remember that in moment this is kicked ball is kicked foot has hit the ball it's made that noise it's moving
this player now goes across doesn't matter what this player does now if they receive this ball they are on side now is every Center ref at U10 going to
catch that right probably not because if it's really close and they have a hard time telling because maybe the AR I mean the ref is standing here trying to catch
up with the play they're looking this way they're not looking this way and there's no way they're going to get there they have to do their best
judgment so if it's close it's a 50/50 ball at best don't complain it is what it is you want to try being a ref give it a go you'll see how hard it is to
call offside especially if the ball turns over quickly and gets knocked perhaps it gets knocked over your head and you have to twist around to see what's going on behind you that can be a
tough call but that is in essence what offside is two players closest to this goal when they're on this half of the field at the moment the
ball is kicked now this player here can be standing in the corner this ball goes here the whistle is not going to call for offside or at
least it shouldn't because as we talked about in that last slide this player is not interfering with the play they're not making this player think they need
to cover them this player is not obstructing them to get to the ball this player isn't doing anything in the play maybe he's over here tying his shoe in
the corner as long as they don't interfere with the ball he could stay there the entire game and it's not offside unless he distracts an opponent he gets in the way or he
goes to touch the ball or looks like he's going to go to touch the ball and distracts one of these players to go at it so play goes on they shoot they score
di offside not involved in the play that's an important thing to to realize I've hear so many coaches screaming for offside when a player is behind the ball
behind the second to last Defender and they're just out here hanging out in space and the plays going on way over doesn't matter as long as they're not
interfering with the ball and interfering in the line of the goal not offside please remember that okay let's look at a few other things on a throwin this player can never be offside
because I to throw in this is like the moment it's being kicked except it's being thrown when this player receives that ball whoops receives the ball even
though they are not behind the second to last Defender right they're they're behind the second to last Defender so they're now in a space that would otherwise be offside because they
received the ball directly on the throwin you cannot be offside on a throwin but remember this that's the first phase as soon as that phase is over if they had you had a player now in
front of the ball remember that graphic in front of the ball and now they play this ball to this person this person's offside because they're in front of the
and not behind two Defenders they're behind only one Defender between them in the goal they're in front of the ball this player is receiving from a throwin not offside
this player gets the ball offside same with Corner kicks when the ball is kicked from a corner kick you could have a player on there and the other team can
have the defenders in front of them this player is not behind the second to last Defender they're they're behind them when this ball comes across not offside
now if there was a teammate even closer to the line and now they receive this ball from this player notice there's a little space players offside they're in
an offside position because they're what in front of the ball and not behind the second to last Defender if they were here and receive this ball all good if
they were level with your their teammate all good because they're behind or at the level of the ball but those are the two pieces have to be
second to last Defender and or have to be behind the ball they can be in front of the ball here why because they're behind the second last Defender
they come here offside on a breakaway and this player is running with this player as long as they are level with the ball or behind it they could make this pass but if this
player gets in front of this player on a breakaway and they play this pass here why because they're in front of the ball and there are not two Defenders between
them and the goal the other place you can't be offside is a goal kick however in ut10 soccer there is that rule in most leagues that the ball cannot cross the
halfway line in the air so you could put your Striker way up here and perhaps The Defenders are here on a goal kick and the goal kick happening from down here
can't kick it in the air now if the ball happens to just make it get on the ground all the way through cuz people miss it and they get the ball and they
score and nobody else touches it they're not offside now I don't know how many youth refs are going to call that correctly but per law the law of the
game they're not offside let's look at some other situations we got a player here and the ball comes to this player and they try to kick it to this player and
by accident they kick it back like this this player play is not offside they can take that ball and shoot why because the ball was played directly from an
opponent and on purpose so the ball gets fired at this player and they just kind of Reach Out instinctively and it deflects off of them and it comes to
this player offside why because it deliberate but if this player maybe the ball is just rolling slowly the player has time to evaluate what's going on there's no pressure on them the ball is
coming to and they just shank it it's not an instinctive stick of their foot out or twitch or anything else they try to hit the ball even if it doesn't go
where they intended it and they shank it behind them if this player who is standing here which is behind the second to last Defender they are in an offside
position if this player knocks the ball to them this is not offside because they receive the ball directly from a deliberate attempt to play the ball so
that's another one whereas people sometimes get tripped up is situations like that let's go over another one that sometimes gets confusing too we have a player here and we just talked about
deliberate offside let's say the play is over here they're not interfering with play necessarily because their way out of the pitcher this play is coming on the side they
take a shot the keeper saves it and the ball comes out and this play comes from an offside position and scores they are offside because they were in an offside
position one of the one of the exception Rules to This is if the ball is saved on purpose and it comes back out to a play in an offside
position that is not the same as this player deliberately playing the ball backwards it was saved in addition same concept if it hits the woodwork if it
hits the post the crossbar and comes out to a player in an offside position who scores the goal it's offside there's no goal all right so those are some
important things that happen around the box now how about this situation we have a player in an offside position we have a player here they take a shot and this
player is in line and distracts the keeper maybe even is in their line of sight and the ball goes in the net that is no goal because they've been judged
to have interfered with play while in an offside position so you have to keep that in mind as well um there's lots of variations on that again because he's in
the way maybe this player is close to here and this player thinks I have to go here to to mark this player and and the player shoots around him because this player
has manipulated this player it can be offside um it may be called offside because the law says if this player here causes another player to change what
they do or maybe they interfere with them maybe they're standing in an offside position this player is trying to get over to the ball and runs in this
player or this player is in the way of them coming over they'll call offside because this player was what interfering with the play this two more little
Oddities that we should go over here and it has to do with fouls and the timing of a foul so let's say this player is in offside position if this ball gets
knocked this way and this player is coming across and this player fouls him so this player is on the way to the ball and fouls him then this is a foul
because the foul happened before the offside call would be made I know that seems a little strange but that the law if this player conversely if this player receives the
ball and then fouls this player or vice versa it doesn't matter this is not going to be a penalty kick because offside happened before the foul happen
so it matters when the offside and the foul happen if the foul happens first before the offside would be of would be called then it's a foul if the offside
happens first and then a foul happens there's no foul because offside has already happened so again another one of those strange quirks with the law it's all about timing where it is where it
isn't here's another strange one that may happen in U10 soccer lots of ball has been bounced around a lot this player is it's hard to see because this
Net's tiny but let's say this player is after an action is inside the net or maybe on the goal line the ball is over here player has the ball
they shoot and score this player hasn't interfered with this player at all cuz maybe he's laying down inside the net or he's falling down he's in the corner as
long as this player hasn't interfered with the goalkeeper even though they're in an offside position it's a goal because either they're in the net and they're the ball has already crossed the
line so again we just talked about fouls the foul happening before or after the offside condition the goal happens before the offside condition the ball is cross the line before this player could
be judged offside because he can't play balls that's in the net already so that's another weird one sometimes it happens kids trip fall they land on the
line or that they're right around here or sometimes they're inside the net the ball goes in Legally past the keeper and the keeper is not by hindered by this
player or distracted by that player they're not interfering with play it's a goal conversely if a player from the other team for some reason goes off the
field to play back here they're judged to be on the goal line and so they're the second to last Defender and so no matter what happens here this player is
going to be on side even if they get past this last person here CU if they're off the field they count as being on the goal line one more odd one here player
here is past this player ball is played them this player over here decided to come off the field and tie his shoot he's on the outside because this player
is off the field it doesn't matter because they're at this location it counts across this entire line so this player is not offside even though the if you were to look at the field
quickly you would think oh wait this player has passed the second to last Defender they just got that ball but this player here tying their shoe in the
corner off the field counts as if they're across this line wherever they are standing this player is not offside I'll put a link in the description but I
encourage you all to get the ifab rule book now your league will probably have their own modifications to the rule book and that's allowed but you should become
familiar with iab's laws and read them they have lots of frequently asked questions they have video examples for things it's really interesting and you'll find that younger refs are even
more experienced adult refs will get some of these things wrong because there's just so many times where there's Nuance involved or there are some parts of the law that maybe happen one out of
a thousand times and so they're going to get it wrong again as far as we're concerned the refs are always right you shouldn't be yelling at refs especially
if they're kid refs that is a no no imagine somebody on the sideline screaming at your kid in the middle of the game well that's what it's like when
there's a 14 or 15 or 16y old kid refereeing he's only been able to start refereeing as they're 14 so as a coach I'm going to tell you right now shut
your mouth the ref is always right even if they're wrong they're right you want to bring it up with the league after the fact do that teach your parents teach
your players teach yourself that's an important rule well I hope that helps you understand the law 11 off side uh it's an important law to know it's
misapplied a lot of times it can be very confusing for new coaches new players new parents uh it's important to look at this make sure you understand it so you
can understand how to coach your teams in the next video we're going to look at specifically how you can use offside to train your players how to do it right so
that when you're attacking you stay on side and conversely how you can use it to your advantage when you're defending or attacking so that your team uses the law to their

the frequently asked questions and just educate yourself on the laws it's really important to know the laws so you know what's going on in the field and so
frankly you don't sound like an idiot on the sideline screaming about something that's actually not offside or any other law that's going on there and also look
at your leagues manual for their changes to the laws cuz they're allowed to do that they're allowed to have exceptions for different age groups like 7v7 because obviously they change law one
and two which is the number of players and the size of the field so that's important too uh to make sure that you know your rules for your local League
