0:01 hello coaches again coach KW here today we're going to take a look at um we're going to follow on from the last video about playing out from the back we're
0:09 going to look at some warm-up and passing patterns that I use um that just reinforce some of the things that were in that video so if you haven't seen
0:16 that video click the uh link wherever it appears or in the description go back and watch that one and then take a look at this video These are ways that you
0:24 can set up your team for a passing practice and while they're doing this practice they're reinforcing the structures patterns directions angle support all the things you want them to
0:33 do and you can do this with as few as four or five kids and as many as 10 or 12 if you're creative on how you uh
0:40 place your kids on the field so let's jump into the graphics and we'll take a look at those right now okay sorry for the interruption but coach KW here
0:48 asking would really help the channel if you would subscribe hit the Thumbs Up Button hit the notification and more importantly share this content with other coaches if it's helped you even a
0:58 little bit it helps the channel grow and helps other coaches find this information the goal really here is to make sure that every kid gets the best
1:06 soccer education they can get and I could use your help with that thanks okay let's take a look at some of these warm-up and passing patterns here
1:14 so we can vary the patterns that we're going to look at in a few minutes to really um mimic the patterns of play outline when we looked at playing out of
1:22 the back if you haven't watched that video please go watch that it will really be helpful it's really important to rotate your players throughout the exercise not every player is going to
1:31 play Keeper in a game we know that we want to offer it to every player but we know that not every player is going to be comfortable that it's really
1:40 important though that in these exercises every player plays every position because they need to gain empathy that phrase again that gaining empathy for your teammates so you know what it's
1:51 like to stand in their shoes it's super important here because again you want to be able to use your goalkeeper as that seventh field player to help in your
1:59 buildout and even maintain possession throughout the game it's really helpful for every player to know what it feels like so they know hey if I wasn't the
2:07 keeper and I'm passing to the keeper where would I want the ball if I and they'll never get that chance if they never stand in the goal box during some
2:15 of these exercises and again it even be great if you have them even in practices Play Keeper every once in a while I'll always harp on that because I feel it's
2:23 super important and it's important to focus on receiving the ball on the back foot so if that phrase is new to you what that means is you want the ball to
2:34 roll past the body to the foot that's furthest from the play that pass the ball usually that means that when you receive that ball your body is now
2:43 facing in the direction you want to go versus being closed off and not being able to see up the field or into the middle of the field wherever the
2:51 pressure or the options are and I'll find a little video or graphic to maybe drop in here to show you what that looks like but it's a super important skill
2:59 that we'll work on with with lots of other passing drills that we'll eventually look at on this channel the other thing I love to show to my players
3:06 and I challenge them is I'll either take out my tactics board or you can use this with cones on the ground um any way you want to do it you can even have the kid
3:15 stand in positions but here's the basic playing out of the back position that we or formation that we looked at in the last video and it's really important to
3:23 understand that this position why the 1231 is such a good formation for 7v7 is it creates all these diamonds and triangles all over the field um you can
3:34 see it here outlined some of our some are irregular diamonds some are perfect diamonds you have triangles and these are just some easy ones there's a minimum of 12 here and there's way more
3:44 actually cuz if you really would to take it you could say the one the seven and the nine or a triangle because if the eight is slid over a little bit so again
3:52 really it's giving great angles of support all over the field and that's why it's such a great formation to play and you see in these passing patterns we
4:02 rely on those angles to really make this work as we go forward so here's the basic setup here's the basic shape and what's important to know is depending on
4:11 the number of players you have at practice it's the positions in the middle that you can subtract from to make it work with however many players show up um even if you have to subtract
4:23 two players I would subtract two players from the nine because this is the Terminus this is the end point of the exercise so having a coach here is
4:31 probably fine to have happen here and then you can take one of the players from the keeper position and then eventually here cuz the idea is you're
4:38 going to have a collection of balls you're going to have a keeper or two and then you're going to play out to both sides that you keep everybody active at
4:45 the same time so and here we're just a very basic you dictate the pattern you want them to play so perhaps in this version we're telling them to play to
4:53 the center back first the number eight second the wide player third then all the way out to the nine and then we play it back and again all we're trying to do
5:04 right now is reinforce these angles and the good skills of passing good side foot pass receiving with that back foot furthest away from the pass so that they
5:14 open up their bodies that look forward and scanning and looking across the field and if you can even though you've said it try to get them to quote unquote
5:23 put a name on the pass so they call their teammate when they're getting ready to pass so that you can start to embed some of that community unication
5:30 skills that are so vitally important as the game goes forward getting your players to be able to talk constructively on the field is a huge skill that gets overlooked when coaching
5:39 kids because it's really super important at the higher levels and if your team can communicate well early on they're going to have a huge Advantage because they'll be able to foreshadow and talk
5:48 to each other and communicate as we go forward so maybe you start that way then maybe you vary that pattern you tell them you want to go out wide then in
5:56 then in then up to the nine maybe you have them play the ball out wide and it comes up and back and up you can vary it
6:04 in a whole bunch of different ways but at first dictate what you want them to do be very prescriptive let's do this first let's do this second and again
6:14 what you're really working on is that passing a receiving skill the technical skill while they're learning the technical knowledge and skill of how to space out how to receive that ball in
6:24 space and make those passes it becomes second nature to them if you reinforce these things so again we're varying the passing patterns to mimic the patterns of play
6:34 We're rotating the players throughout the exercise we're focusing on that receiving on the back foot so they can open the body and they're scanning when they don't have the ball every time the
6:43 ball moves tell them they should look around and spot another player and again what we'll do next is as they gain confidence now you can add pressure so
6:53 now you can add one teammate on either side that's now going to be pressurizing the activity so it now Bec a little bit more game likee and so now their job is
7:02 first maybe you tell them it's passive you're chasing after the ball but you're not trying to actively steal it you're just trying to get in the way and in
7:09 that way now your team is now working on making accurate passes Under Pressure without having to worry about getting tackled and everything else we're ramping the pressure up as we go and as
7:21 you see we've worked through that progression and we've moved the ball up and around and then we recycle and do it again again rotating your players around
7:30 so that's the next step is adding pressure making it more game likee so now we've been directive telling them what pattern we want to play now you can give them some Freedom
7:41 now feel free to pass to whomever but again make that stipulation they have to put a name on their pass they have to call out to the teammate that they're
7:49 going to pass the ball to and then they can have the freedom to pass it in whatever pattern they want so you can see here the two sides of the field for
7:57 example are just performing the same types of patterns they just did it in a different order so again giving them some choice to now make it again a
8:05 little bit more game realistic where they have to decide where the ball goes finally we can do something what's called a directional Rondo now if you've never heard of the term of Rondo
8:17 basically it's a game of keep away uh man man in the middle um pickle in baseball is a version of a Rondo so the idea is you have a collection of players
8:27 in a shape usually a circle a square where sometimes there's a player on that team in the middle and then there's a player there's one or two or three
8:34 players in the middle who basically their job is to try and get the ball from the team the players that are passing it around them and so a
8:41 directional Rondo is a Rondo in which instead of it just going random we just trying to make a pass to keep it away from players and that's a valuable skill
8:48 to use it's a great warm-up we'll look at some of those in another session a directional Rondo is you're using those Concepts but there's an end goal you're
8:57 trying to move the ball from One Direction to another and that's what this is so we're going to use our shape and now we're going to add pressure kind
9:06 of like what we showed in that second grouping where we added passive pressure now this pressure is active and what we can do is we can start with one player
9:13 then we can add two then we can add three until it's very game likee so now you see here we've got players set up we've got two pressing players they're
9:22 already in the middle if you want they you can make the stipulation they have to start at the halfway line if your buildout line happens to be this one in
9:30 your league then start them there by all means and now we have one ball we're trying to move the ball around while those two players are actively trying to
9:38 steal it and what you can do is you can set a condition to say you need to do X number of passes before you can pass it
9:44 to the nine or the coach that's standing at the top of the field or every player has to touch the ball once every player has to touch the ball twice you can
9:53 increase the complexity as your players gain confidence and ability so maybe start with one player pressure in make sure you swap that player out it's a lot
10:01 of running around then you add two then you can add three and now it's very game likee in that the team is now having to work the ball out from the back while
10:10 another team is trying to actively take it away from them so it's a whole bunch of steps that you can use as you go forward with this so again in summary
10:18 we're using these pattern patterns as a warm-up once you've trained them you could use them before games you can use them various practices again you can focus on the technical skills which are
10:28 super important right now of passing and receiving at the same time you're teaching your players how to use those technical skills in the spaces and the shapes that you want your team to play
10:38 in diamonds and triangles you're focusing on all those good angles the body rolling across the body for far foot and scanning teaching your players to scan whenever the ball moves to look
10:50 to see where their teammates are and their opposition are you can sometimes have a game that while you're doing this as a coach you can hold up two different
10:58 color pennies and you hold up and the team has to look when that the ball is moving and call out what color they see you can do lots of fun games that way
11:06 you can slowly increase the speed of play as they develop Mastery basic skills you can add pressure you can add conditions to make it harder and harder
11:14 until you've got it to the point where it's game likee and again you're practicing these specific movements and the patterns of play the Train the timing of the movements off the ball we
11:23 talked about in the previous video playing out from the back waiting for the second pass to happen for some of those wide play so when you're doing your directional
11:31 Rondo it's some of that activity can get worked into as well so I hope this quick short video is helpful to you to think of ways that you
11:40 can use practices to reinforce the shapes and patterns that you need to do to play out of the back that patterning and that shape and movement with and
11:48 without the ball really hits a bunch of skills passing skills receiving skills scanning skills moving with and without the ball supporting teammates all the things that you want your players to
12:00 learn you can do in a controlled sequence and then add complexity to it as they get better and more comfortable at it until you get it to be game speed
12:09 so that when it is in a game they feel more comfortable performing those patterns so I hope this is super useful to you um until next time I hope you
12:17 guys are more successful getting your first game in that we were I'll put a picture up here but this is what I did yesterday uh snow in New England so
12:25 first games all over the place canceled that's just what we live with here so until next time I hope you have a great time with your kids out on the field
12:33 learning and best of luck to you if you're starting your spring season I'll see you real soon
