0:01 well hello coaches welcome back it's coach KW here for another video I hope that you enjoyed my last video uh it was for the kids there's a 1500 touch
0:09 workout that U my son when he was about 10 or 11 recorded for other kids and I thought I'd repackage it and share it for you if you haven't seen it yet maybe
0:16 take a look and since it is the winter months and that's what we're going to be talking about here perhaps it's something you could send off to your
0:22 players to work on over the winter nothing like a little extra work at home to make your players better in the offseason and speaking of offseason in
0:30 the winter that it is what it is here for me uh I live in New England and of course now at daylight savings time the sun is gone by 4:30 we don't have really
0:39 lighted fields around here and so now we need to look at some Alternatives and for a lot of folks there isn't any alternatives because you know like us
0:47 we're covered in snow and ice for half the year so we just can't go out to the fields and have a kick a Bo or do anything like that there is some options
0:54 around in our Nea Woods to play uh indoor games on Turf uh the only problem is is the facilities that run these they run these house leagues uh many of them
1:03 have some pretty to me at least strange uh combinations of rules like uh one of the big ones around here plays 8v8 with no offside uh on a turf field which I
1:13 have a hard time wrapping my head around I'm playing 7v7 a 9v9 uh the field is not it's kind most of them are about the size of a 7v7 field maybe smaller but
1:24 we're playing 8v8 but then we have no offside so it seems it breaks all sorts of the rules that you used to on a field that big and it just doesn't work for me
1:32 honestly and so the other option that we've come to here is um something that is the official indoor game of FIFA but not a lot of people outside perhaps the
1:41 club World know and that's why I'm trying to highlight that and that's footall footsal is the official FIFA indoor game it was invented in South America it's played indoors on a gym
1:50 space uh an official footall court uh is a little bit longer than a basketball court but around here since the basketball courts are available indoors and basically every school gym around
2:01 plus facilities uh elsewhere indoors uh it's a very popular option but it's a niche option and I'm hoping to make it more of an option for folks because I
2:11 think it's fantastic for your players to play in the wintertime and we're going to look at that right now so what is footall so footall is a
2:20 5v5 game it's played indoors usually on a basketball court the Nets uh 2 m x 3 m so you know do the math there that's about 6 1/2 by 12
2:30 it's very much like a uh 7v7 goal maybe a slightly a bit Square played on the basketball court usually use the lines from a basketball court like the
2:40 three-point line although you're finding more and more places who do footall have the right lines for the um the the goal area which is a little bit flatter than
2:49 uh that but in a pinch that works perfectly fine a lot of times the volum ball lines are there too and sometimes they use that for um there's a pressure
2:57 line it can't be crossed uh for for for restart um one of the interesting bits of footsole and why it makes it so quick is there's a 4- second rule so when the
3:07 ball goes out of play or the keeper has the ball in their hands as soon as the ball is ready to be played so you retrieved it from out of bounds you
3:14 place it on the sideline um you have four seconds to play that ball goal kick they don't have goal kicks but a goalie has the ball in the hand you have to
3:23 roll it out they have four seconds once they have control of the ball free kick 4 seconds once it's ready to play so it really encourages is speed of play
3:31 they're flying Subs so very much like hockey you can substitute on the fly as the game goes on you don't have to stop uh the game doesn't have to stop to do
3:40 it uh one main rule is the player has to leave the field before the next player goes on or you get a yellow card but um it is an interesting uh challenge to
3:50 sometimes substitutes those players who are on the far side of the court to get them over so there's some new challenges there it allows you to have that flying
3:56 sub rotate real quick keep your players fresh and move as fast as you can there are no throwin uh if it goes out of bounds the ball is placed on the line
4:07 you have to be outside the line the ball can't be rolling and you got four seconds to play it in with a kick Keepers don't have goal kicks they have
4:14 goal clearances which they have to roll the ball out from their hands when they play um one of the other interesting pieces of it again to keep the game
4:22 moving is once the ball has been released into play by The Keeper you cannot play back to the keeper unless the other team has touched the ball so
4:30 the idea being here is that you're constantly going forward you're constantly attacking um and if you're maintaining possession you can't use your keeper as that extra player um it's
4:39 again to keep the flow of the game moving quickly it uses a special low bounce ball and I'm going to put in a video here to take a look at this but
4:47 it's almost like gravity is broken because if you imagine if you've ever done an indoor soccer practice on a gym floor you know that that ball is just
4:54 bouncing everywhere makes it hard to control you spend more time trying to control the ball than doing anything with it footsal used a special padded ball on the inside and I'll show you
5:03 here in this video I'm going to drop these two balls by rule a footsal ball is not supposed to Dr bounce more than two times for 26 Ines and you can see
5:11 here from the video it basically looks like gravity is broken uh it's quite the thing the first time you use one uh that's because there's internal padding
5:19 both of those balls have pumped up the seven or eight PSI you can see how much the regular soccer ball bounced around where that other ball just kind of
5:26 landed like a lead balloon if you will so really kind of interesting there the ball is also slightly different sizes I want to put a picture up here of all
5:36 five of the balls that you can play an official FIFA match with two of are foot balls and then three of soccer balls and from right to left you can see there's a
5:45 size three footsal ball and that size three footsal ball is used all the way through sixth grade um and you can see it's about the same size as a size three
5:53 soccer ball then you can see the size four footz ball next to a size four soccer ball and that size four foots ball is used all the way through ad delt
6:01 there are only two sizes of ball and then you can see the size five ball how much bigger it is so foot balls are a different size if your kids or you are
6:09 going out to shop and you're like well I play soccer and we're playing you know I'm a Grade Three grade six grade five I use a size four ball not in footle use a
6:17 size three ball and you can see that little bit smaller size ball it has an effect on the game as well there's no offside in foot and I know I mentioned
6:25 that about the turf game as being a downside but because the court is so small all it's less of an effect and because the spaces are more condensed
6:33 it's not quite the same as if on a turf field you're leaving a player hiding out in the corner so that you can goal hang it's a much harder process it's part of
6:41 the game because the space is so small the 24 minute halves um rolling substitutions five minute halftime what's really weird about foot solo is at halftime you pick up all your gear
6:53 and you switch benches so you're always coaching right next to your keeper side of the field none of this um your team is on the other side like it is on an
7:03 outdoor game it's kind of weird because honestly you know what uh pre-teen boys look like it literally looks like a yard sale on the bench before the game it's
7:11 even started and then halftime have to collect all their stuff and bring it to the LSI it's kind of funny um and one of the other defining features of footl is
7:19 it's a low contact game there's no slide tackling that's almost an automatic red card um for real there's no shoulder charging um because we're on a hard
7:28 surface the risk of of injury um there's a foul system that we'll get into the details in in another video but suffice it to say the point is is it's about
7:37 ball Mastery and ball playing and not about physical aspect and so it's a great sport to really be able to focus on how to play with the ball at your
7:46 feet and with your teammates moving and less about who can bully another team around on the court and knock them all over the place so why and so many other
7:53 coaches who know about footall so passionate about playing footall on the winter months or even in the summer months for that matter matter if you're in a hot location I had one of the
8:01 coaches reach out to me and say oh no we play it in the summer they're from Florida makes sense so anyways it's that small space everything is quick
8:10 everything is fast you have to have that close control with the ball close to your body or touches that are close to you because you don't have a lot of room
8:18 for maneuverability the ball rolls quickly obviously on a court so one bad heavy touch and the ball may be out of bounds and again with pressure on you
8:26 very quickly because it's small condensed space it really forces as your players to work on keeping the ball close and keeping it tight to their body with good touches good control it really
8:36 works on those ball Mastery skills because in order to keep it close right you really need to be comfortable with the ball at your feet close by so again
8:44 really really focusing espe just in practices alone that mind games there's a lot of work on ball Mastery skills to keep that ball close to have those good
8:53 touches to really work on your touch on the ball when we're playing we're looking for quick combinations with other player so now they're having to pick their heads up make decisions
9:02 faster again because of that small space because you get pressure quickly being able to play those faster combinations helps their speed of play because again tight space Close Quarters fast pressure
9:14 really helps with the decision- making and speeds up their thought and we'll see later what happens when we go outside um with all those supporting movements out there players without the
9:24 ball now have to be much more engaged let no longer pass the ball to somebody watch them dribble stand back jog up everybody's in the play constantly
9:34 everybody's an option from the moment the ball's in play it really works on your 1 V one and 1 V2 and 2v2 both attacking and defending fantastic skills
9:44 in general but a lot more because that pressure comes you need to be comfortable at taking on your player or working with a teammate to get around a
9:53 player and conversely defending a lot of paired up 2v2 a lot of the game work like this in terms of Defending working with the partner again some great skills
10:03 to learn in a smaller SP space that can translate once you get back outside there's lots of fast transition so you're constantly going from Attack to defense attack to defense in a small
10:12 area in a small time keeps you sharp but Al also works on making sure you're in good positions to recover if you're in one of those situations and because of
10:22 that there's a lots of action it's a lot of fun the parents love it the kids love it score lines of 137 1512 152 it's just lots of action lots of fun
10:35 lots of goals and that's exciting there a lots of people get a chance to take a shot on that get a chance to score when you have
10:41 15 sometimes you know combined upward to 20 or 30 goals in the game everybody's getting a little bit of action there it could be a lot of fun for them so some
10:51 of the footo technical differences which we talked about was that low bounce ball and the smaller ball that's only those two sizes but the interesting part about
10:59 it is it's less forgiving so you have to really focus on those technical skills especially on the passing and the receiving uh when I was coaching high
11:07 school girls and we'd have an indoor practice because of the rain or something my girls hated it because I'd pull the foot balls out we'd be in the
11:14 cafeteria and we'd be playing passing drills and it just calls you out if you're not doing things properly so that's one of the great things I feel
11:22 with footall is it lets you really focus on those fundamental techniques of striking the ball and receiving the ball because that ball is denser and heavier you have to hit it better and straighter
11:34 you don't just get to rely on the rebound of the air in the ball because it's padded because of that low bounce piece of it so it really does Focus your
11:42 players on playing with great technique and it really sharpens that piece of it also in footo you use a lot more of the sole of your foot than you might do on
11:51 the outdoor game and if you watch pro games or some other games like that high level games you can sometimes find those players who have played foot so because
11:59 a lot of times they will use the sole of the foot but indoors on a court using the soulle of your foot is an excellent way to receive a pass because you
12:07 probably have pressure that's really close to you you need to be able to keep that ball close and as the ball gets fizzed into you being able to put your
12:14 foot on the ball and stop it and hold it is a really valuable skill and then taking the botom of your foot and rolling it out because there's no
12:21 friction really on that Court versus grass or turf you can pass the ball almost with the solle of your foot or at least you can push it out take that
12:28 touch while rolling it out after you've stopped it it is different it does usually mean that you're going to receive the ball on your front foot which is totally opposite
12:39 usually what we do in outdoor soccer we talk about all the time letting the ball roll across your body and playing it with your outside foot far foot so that
12:47 you can turn and look and see what's going on in fot so that pressure is coming so quickly a lot of times you're taking it with that foot that's closer
12:53 to the ball that comes in while you hold off a player it's not really a downside of the game but it is helps players get more comfortable with tight close pressure um
13:05 and that has translations into the outdoor game so we play footall to help us with soccer we're not footsal purists usually there's techniques and tactical changes to the game that if you were
13:18 playing a pure footsal game it's a little bit of a different game I have my footall uh one certification and it helps me with the basics but if you were
13:26 to ask me you know some of the more complicated uh structure of how to play and how they play you know in true footsal fashion I only have the basics
13:35 because really again we're doing this to be better soccer players and in future videos we'll look at a little bit of that but some of those benefits
13:43 translate so those better technical skills the passing the receiving the scanning the movement all those things because you're in that tight space such a great way to develop those skills over
13:54 the winter time the speed of play and the combination play obviously we talked again in that small space you really have to be able to control that ball and keep it close
14:05 which again has benefits Outdoors as well to be able to receive that ball in tighter spaces and have that control have that speed of thought that you can
14:14 already are thinking about the next pass before the ball gets to you again we talked about that better 1 V one and 2v2 attacking and defending when we get back
14:22 out on the grass and we have a little bit more space being able to do that with more confidence the translation is also again with that close support
14:32 having that better field awareness because you're having to scan a lot more in that small space because things come at you more quickly when you get back on
14:39 that grass field those habits translate and my players also tell me all the time that they feel like when they go back spring the game is much slower because
14:49 now they've got back on a field that's two to four times as big as a basketball court you've got more space and space equals time and so they're getting that
14:58 ball and feeling like they have an hour of time to make a decision versus seconds when they're playing footall and it just again increases all those other
15:06 things speed of thought speed of play my teams when they come back out in the spring after playing footall those first few games you can see the difference how
15:16 quick and sharp they are they just honestly pass their way through other teams like they're standing still because they're so used to every action happening so quickly and now they have
15:26 all the space and time but they're still working on that speeded up space uh and time in their brain for coming out of footsole it really is remarkable um it's
15:35 really a great way to increase all those sort of skills while in the winter program to then translate back out to the grass in future videos we're going
15:47 to look at more detail how we play footo some of the strategies we can use and things like that but I'm playing a little bit of game footage here just for
15:55 folks to get a sense as to what it looks like this is a grade 14 team at this point playing you can see the court you can see the referee you can see the
16:04 teams the Nets you can get a sense of what this looks like from up high uh we're lucky enough we play some place that has a mezzanine so I can just throw
16:11 a GoPro up there and make recordings of the games um but you can see some of the close technique a lot of the skill that's needed how much the game is
16:19 condensed uh into a space uh the kids really love it uh the parents really love it too it's just one of those it's it's warm it's comfortable It's
16:29 they get a a spot on the bleacher and they can watch the game right in front of them they can hear everything they can see everything uh my parents do love
16:37 it uh a great deal uh playing and in future videos uh next couple videos we're going to take a look at a little bit more specifics on how we set up how
16:47 we um play from the back some of the rule specificities that are going on in there but I wanted to give everybody a little bit of an intro to what footsal
16:55 is to get you thinking about it if it's something it's an option in your area it would be a great way to continue your winter season as always helps the
17:04 channel if you like share subscribe uh the Channel's taken a big leap in the last uh month or so the last couple of videos in terms of viewership and such
17:12 keep sharing Please Subscribe give me the thumbs up it just helps the algorithm we're getting close to hitting some of the uh the levels that will unlock some new things for me for
17:23 YouTube I'd really appreciate your help with that if you're enjoying these videos uh I'd love to hear your comments if you play footall or do other things
17:31 or if you have questions get them down there because it just helps me with the next video so I hope this has been helpful to you I hope your offseason if
17:39 that's where you are uh that's where we are right now is started you're getting a little bit of rest and then we move forward so until next time coach KW I'll
17:46 see you out there in the field or the courts bye
