hello coaches out there it's coach KW here here in a different location I am down in Tennessee at Nashville actually for MLS next playoffs uh my son plays
for an MLs next team uh he's a u15 playing for the U6 team club team he's on very proud and excited to be down here watch him play with some of the
older boys a little bit of a challenge for him which is great and get to see some really high level soccer down here which is also fantastic but today while
I'm down here all alone I figured I could record a video here in my Airbnb since I'm staying down here alone because he has to stay with the team so
today we're going to talk about recording games uh how to do it what tools to use to do it and why you might do it honestly so let's get into it
right now okay why do you want to record the games well there's a lot of obvious things there is clearly if your kid happens to be on the team you want to
have that video for poster uh so you can watch the games after the fact kids love to watch themselves play and so making a video that way is
fantastic uh I do it as well for my whole team because I have some skills and knowledge on how to do it as we'll see a little bit and it makes it fun for
everybody I also record it for my club we actually uh if you use Google like we have a Google account for our club we actually run our club using Google so
you know we have Gmail accounts with custom domains and things like that uh you get a YouTube channel you can build a YouTube channel so we record if
anybody does record the games from lots of different ways we put them up into a private uh playlist so that other coaches can take a look and perhaps use
them to learn and also makes it easy to share with families as well uh it's not public list uh so you have to be logged into our uh play metric system that we
use to manage our teams and the link is in there for us so it's a fantastic way to share video obviously YouTube is built to do that and just about anybody
with a Google account can make a YouTube channel and host these sort of things so that's what we do here so we do that uh obviously for the kids to watch it for
our coaches to watch it and that's the thing is as a coach recording your games can be super instructional for yourself to see what works see what didn't see
what techniques and tools you can work on at practice does there something that you you notice over and over again that is deficient do you notice things that
are working well so you can let go of those things and work on some of those other things what did the other team do are there things ideas that the other
team did that you might take from and say hey I never thought of that maybe I can use that or vice versa are things that other team did that you could coach
your kids to better deal with so the next time they face a team that does something similar they have more information on how to manage the situation um that's really what comes
from video as far as I'm concerned is being able to use as a teaching tool to for myself and secondarily for the kids now you can certainly use it as a video
teaching tool for kids kids love to watch it um but you have to be careful uh you can't expect them to a sit through an hourlong film session and B
you need to set some guidelines out uh one of my you uh 14 coaches girls coaches he does some video sessions with them because they're all seventh graders
and you know before the session he says hey we're going to watch this video people are going to make mistakes we are not making fun of or picking on our
teammates for making mistakes because we all make mistakes instead what we're going to do is use those to make improvements to learn from those mistakes and also at the same time look
at things how they worked well so that we can both see the good and the bad and try to improve on our next performance and I think that's a great way to go
into it so if you've got U10 players and you're going to do this sort of thing a keep it short keep it specific and really have your stuff prepared ahead of
time so you don't lose their attention and again focus on the fact that we're here to learn everybody makes mistakes you don't want to see anybody getting
picked on or made fun of um in it no matter how good-natured it can be it can turn pretty quickly kids can be pretty cruel as it is so let's talk about how
we can do it lots of different ways we can do it going up in expense time energy etc etc so the first way obviously is just having a parent
recorded from the sideline holding their phone I my iPhone that's in front of me records in 4k no problem at all 30 frames a second which is plenty fast
enough for a youth soccer game um you can even zoom in if you want to so that's the fastest and easiest way the downside obviously is they've got to
stay focused on the game sometimes when things get exciting sometimes the parents forget that they're recording and next thing you know you kind of get that Blair Witch moment where the phone
is pointing Anywhere But Where you really wanted it to be the next option is to put that phone or camera on a tripod right so that at least it's
steady and somebody's moving it around but it's basically the same situation you're getting the sideline view you can see some things and you definitely can hear plenty of things mainly the parents
which sometimes are more instructional and interesting and entertaining than what goes onto the field but not necessarily from a soccer standpoint isn't always the best choice now you can improve that
situation if you're lucky enough that the field you're playing on has a small hill nearby and you can get a little height height always equals better because now you're going to get in a
little bit more depth you can see a little bit more of the shape and the field as it goes along so that's great um sometimes you might be lucky enough
to play in a place that has stands or even a stadium um are you 14 teams every once in a while we book them into our High School stadium so they get a chance
to play on Turf has a nice tall set of bleachers obviously and so I'll bring a device up there now you certainly can do it with a phone and a tripod from up
there uh usually what I do is I have a larger DSLR I put on a tripod and now I have a little bit of Zoom range a higher
ability to resolve and I can do that for some of my teams and what I can do is we'll put up a little bit of example videos of all these different things uh
as we go along so the next step is using some way to get more height and more width to the game without a human having to drive it and so one way that I've
stumbled across is using a GoPro and a tripod a very tall tripod um a ridiculously tall tripod as a matter of fact um I have a 20 foot tall tripod
that I got on Amazon it's similar to one that I've used with one of the more expensive systems for one of my uh Club teams when my son was playing for them
so I got some experience with that but what I found is with this 20 foot triod and a GoPro and a few other accessories you can get a fairly decent view of the
field now you will not get the entire field if you're on the sideline uh and that's can be a downside because even with the super wide field of view that
some of these action cameras have it's just not wide enough to get sideline to sideline Corner flag to Corner flag and get the whole rectangle if you don't
mind that it's fine to put it on that if you want to just put it on one half of the field so the first half of the field
you might get the defensive side of the game and the second side half you get more of the attacking side then that's a perfectly valid way to do it what I find
more useful at least at 7v7 for the field size we're talking about is putting it behind the goal so you get that tactical View From The End Zone if
you will so I'll place the GoPro and tripod if I can usually it's about anywhere from 30 to 40 feet behind the net it depends how wide the field is
depending on what town we happen to go to and whether or not I have the room but usually I'm able to get it far enough back that I know it'll be safe
that you know if somebody misses the net they've really got to be right on target to hit that tripod leg uh arm really up in the air um hasn't happened yet knock
on wood um but angle it so that now I'm getting Corner flag the corner flag nearby and now I'm looking straight up the field now GoPros are notorious for
overheating what I have found is that if you remove the battery and you power it with the remote battery so I happen to have the Volta which is the battery grip
for GoPros but before I had that I would use one of those power Banks the external power banks that you could use you know charge your phone your tablet
even your computer and a 16 foot long USB cable that you could buy I would plug that into the GoPro without its battery installed and that's how I would
power it and it seems to have worked pretty well now like I said I'm down here in Nashville and today it was 97 degrees humidity the real feel was like
108 I'm not sure any camera is going to survive in the sun standing up in a tripod in that envir environment and if you live down in this neck of the woods
all the time we P to you I don't know how you do it but up in New England even on late uh June days where it can get
into the 80s I haven't had a problem so far with the overheating there are other cameras out there the insta 360 Ace Pro and some other action cameras everything
I mentioned in here I'm going to have links in the description that you can go to Amazon to buy um affiliate links helps me out a little bit so I
appreciate it if you do buy it from there it doesn't cost you anything more but from that view as you can see in some of this video example footage I'll
have going on here you really get a pretty clear view now yes the play is far down the field look tiny and I yes I do have to edit this in Final Cut Pro
you could use iMovie or you could use Windows Movie Maker or something else to do the editing I do edit it I do straighten it out I do you know do a few
things to it but in the end even if you did very little it's pretty usable because once you put the tripod up the GoPro app you can see the camera
remotely before you hit record so you can get a sense of like do I need to twist the pole left or right did I angle it down the right amount and then you
press record from down on the ground and then you walk away um it's a fantastic system that you can use that way so that's the next step up now if you use
if you can get your hands on two of those cameras uh GoPro or other one like that um or some other Camas will talk about there's some software out there
that I found from companies that will Stitch those two cameras together so you set the two cameras up so they kind of overlap in the middle but one's looking
to one side and the other from the sideline and you then send the video files up to the services or there's one that you can actually run on your
computer as well it'll Stitch the two video cameras together straighten out the view and even do a little pan and scanning to try and follow the game
around um so the two that I found one's called action Stitch and the other one's called autocam uh one both are actually available to download and pay for and
install and run locally and at least one of them has the option to upload your footage and let them process it one of them is as cheap as $5.50 a game um if
you want to upload it and wait 24 hours which I think is fantastic but they have monthly in yearly subscriptions and the most expensive one that I looked at is
only $2 or $300 a year which is really cheap when it comes to what it's doing also one of the vendors on this they actually recommend set of security
cameras that I'd never seen before and again I'll have links to these they're basically these 180 degree security cameras with four or 8K video image uh elements in it the only problem with it
is they're going to get powered over ethernet so now you're going to have to have a power supply like a jackery or a much bigger battery Bank type unit
you're going to have a small power over ethernet hub and you're going to run ethernet cable up to the top of this camera but what this solu solution could
do for you is get really close to some of these more expensive systems we're going to look at in just a second um for allinone so you might carry a few more
things with it but for the total cost of ownership which looks like anywhere from like $3 to $500 total investment you can get a pretty decent system uh I'm
looking into that for for myself and if I do go that route I'll definitely do a followup to let you know how that goes now the last options out there are these
companies out there that have now been running these camera systems for soccer teams for a couple of years now and there's three big ones there's Veo there's trace and this pixelot and these
systems have an all-in-one unit um that goes on the top of a tall tripod has an app that lets you calibrate and start the recording and usually how most of
these work is you do the recording you take the unit down when you get home you plug it into ethernet it uploads to the server to their servers they process the
video and they pan and scan around the field trying to follow the action and so you can see the game and it almost looks like a camera operator is
moving the the video around and I'll have some examples again of this here so you can see what this looks like because I used to use the trace system a couple
of years ago um with my son's team when he was playing for a different Club that's what they used it's a cool solution until you look at the price tag
most of these systems will set you back close to three grand or more per year because it's a sub the subscription prices and it's only for one team at a
time if you want to use it for more than one team they charge you more than one team even if you have one camera uh for My Town teams I asked for a quote from
one of the companies out there and I got back a quote for $355,000 for the year to use it with my 14 16 um different town teams which we
could never afford uh as a town that's just crazy talk so those systems are out there um you can take a look at it even you know dividing up the cost amongst uh
the teams it doesn't really become coste effective until you're you know playing 11v 11 and have 18 or 20 kids on a team and even then that seems like a lot of
money the last one that we actually at my town are working with and they're kind of I want to say they're Kickstarter they're in the entry phase
is Real Player um and Real Player um their pricing model is very interesting and where they're charging $99 a month uh for multiple teams uh which makes it
super attractive for towns like us and teams like us um they're still in the production process they've been had some setbacks because of supply chain issues um but they've been partnering with MLS
next and have been testing their equipment at these MLS events um actually going to go see them in a little bit when I go see my son's game
in another hour and a half or so from where I'm sitting right now I'll get to talk to them again I've talked to the CEO they've been working hard to resolve
the issues but we're really excited in our town to get them we were hoping to get it in April this year year looks like we're going to get it for the start
of next season in August um but again be really interested because it'll allow us to record these games and move it from field to field and get different teams
their recordings and be able to share it with them so I'm hoping that um that all works out and as soon as we get it and use it of course I'll make a video on it
and show it to all of you so again all the things I talked about have links in the descriptions uh be helpful if you want to look some of those up I have
example video throughout this video here I hope those are useful to you I find video super helpful um even for my own coaching Journey um and if I go for my dlic this
fall I believe there's a component where they want to have you recorded as you're doing a session so one of these techniques the GoPro for example would
be perfect for a training session with my U10 or next year u12 team that I can use to submit so I hope you find this useful I hope if your season just ended
that you get some rest and relaxation CU I know as a volunteer coach it takes way more time than you ever expected away from your house and family but I hope
