0:00 hey coaches coach KW here good to see you all again this is the third video in my 9v9 specific series and today it's probably the most assful one and that's
0:09 playing out of the back uh playing out of the back is a huge thing for me if you haven't seen my 7v7 series practically half of it is basically
0:18 talking about playing out of the back because it's so important especially to learn at 7v7 mistakes are made but it's those mistakes that make them better so
0:27 that they're ready for the moment at 9v9 that they play out of the B so if you haven't watched those please go back and take a look at some of those because it
0:33 will give you some ideas also in the 9v9 space and while I'm at it I don't do this often uh I just it's not in my nature but if you could uh the channel
0:44 has gained some fantastic growth recently uh some fantastic folks I've started to interact with believe it or not on Reddit uh the soccer coaches resources uh subreddit has been
0:55 fantastic a shout out to all of you who found my channel from there but the biggest thing you can do to help this channel is to give me a thumbs up to
1:03 subscribe to share with your other coaches about two-thirds of you watch my videos are not subscribed why is that it's not that hard if you're getting some value please hit the button it'll
1:14 help find help other coaches find this info and as we're gain closer to that 1,000 subscriber mark it will unlock some features on YouTube that might make
1:23 it easier for me to do even more things on this channel so I appreciate your effort and time I just asked that small thing of if you could do that for me
1:31 that would be fantastic so thanks a lot so what we're going to do in this video is we're going to take a look at how I set up to play out of the back and
1:40 what conditions I teach my players to look for to decide how they're going to play out we're going to look at some graphics we'll do a little bit on the
1:48 Whiteboard perhaps and we'll also look at game footage to look at what we do with our players it's really important to me to learn how to play out of the
1:55 back and develop those skills with those kids that they're so comfortable maybe you've inherited a team so you didn't get a chance to teach them at 77 so now
2:03 you're starting from scratch we also look at some of the things that I do in practices to help build those skills that they're going to need to play out
2:09 of the back so let's get going so when I'm coaching my teams to play out of the back in 9v9 uh we have a basic setup and structure that I have
2:18 here on the side of the screen and basically what I practice and instruct my players to deal with is to take a look up when they have that ball at the
2:27 goal line with the keeper as they're watching the game progress and figure out how the other team is pressing so many teams because they don't play out
2:35 of the back they don't press because they're just not used to it because they think why would anybody play a short pass there and you can see some of these
2:43 video examples here that you just see the teams back off if that's the case having that basic structure and being able to play up and make these short
2:51 passes it's much easier what I try to instill my players is eventually teams start to creep forward even if they're not used to pressing and so now we have
2:59 have to look for the most important piece I think of is how many players are they pressing at the top of the box and so we drill for basically one player two
3:09 players or three players so this first example we have set up here a 4-31 common formation we see played against us they've got one player that's come
3:17 forward to press now when you look at this setup you look down where the go the ball is in the goalkeeper you have one player we've got that two players maybe just
3:27 outside the six-yard box that you're going to pass that ball Tu you've got those that eight sitting in down straight up in the middle you've got your two eights as how I set up and then
3:38 I have my two wide Wingers my seven and 11 so automatically when I look at this that one pressing player is automatically at minimum outn numbered four to one between the keeper your two
3:48 center backs and that six sitting there at the top of the box and that part right there should be the key to your thought process is how do I use my
3:58 overloaded numbers to get this ball up and out so for this process here it may be just this simple pass out wide to one of your center backs maybe they even
4:09 when they see this one pressing player and everybody's backed off they may even step wider away from the edge of these six they get that ball and you can see
4:17 all the options they have available to them right now they can take their space they can dribble they can make that pass Direct in direct into the six they can
4:26 play to the wide player but the idea is once that play play has the ball all the other pressing players you see they have they have three in the Midfield and in
4:34 effect we have five against their three in the Midfield once we bypass the pressing player it's now a simple matter of just finding where that overload is
4:43 and making the pressing team make a choice if I play out to my if I play out to my seven now it's what the other team does if their two midfielders react and
4:54 start to rush to that side of the field then in the middle of the field I have another eight I have the nine up in front I have the six that's still
5:01 dropped in behind my play has all sorts of options to be able to progress that ball away from pressure or around it if they stay Central then my Winger has
5:10 space to take the to take the lane and if they're really accomplished and perhaps block that off we still have numbers in the middle of the field and
5:18 behind them but with the center backs and the keepers to outnumber them and play basically that overloaded Rondo through the field to get to someplace else so when there's pressing with one
5:28 it tends to be relatively straightforward no matter how you set up finding those Lanes to get out even the goalkeeper playing direct to one of those wide players once in a while just
5:39 shakes things up to keep the other team off balance but what you'll probably find over games is teams and we'll see in these videos if I when I put up some
5:47 of these examples the teams that press with one eventually start getting closer and closer because they realize oh they're always playing short this is different and they start to try and
5:58 press and when they do that it just means you now have to take different tactics so here in this second example here's a team that presses with two
6:06 perhaps they play in a very common 332 if you didn't watch my video on different 9b9 formations here's one that I see a lot which I don't love but a lot
6:15 of coaches play it and so they have two players up at the box and the thing here is really to realize that perhaps the simplest option to break this press is
6:27 to play straight down the middle to your six because once they do you have cut those two pressing players right out of the play and once you've done that
6:35 you're at a minimum 43 in the center of the field if you include yourself with the ball you're 5v3 and if you include your Striker he's now pressed up against
6:45 usually a lone Center back you can sometimes play a ball over the top to keep them honest and make them turn and face their goal but the idea here is if
6:53 you can play that ball straight up your six can drop off the top of the box if those two pressing Players let's say you know somewhere outside of the D spread
7:02 apart in front of your two center backs your two center backs will be under pressure immediately if you play that ball directly to them from the keeper so
7:09 one of the strategies there is just to play it straight up to the middle to the six who can turn and face and now they have all sorts of options as they go
7:17 forward the other option that you can look at is something that you see in professional games all the time since the Advent of being able to have players
7:27 in the Box for goal kicks whereas prior if you don't remember on a goal kick everybody had to be outside the box except for the keeper or the player
7:35 taking the kick now you can play that ball inside the ball can be touched inside the box and played and so a lot of teams will place the ball on the
7:44 corner of the goal area and one of the center backs starts with the ball and very often that pass goes to the keeper why do they do that if you've ever asked
7:53 yourself if you've seen it on the game and you wonder why what that does is it now instead of the pass coming from The Keeper in the center of the field to one
8:02 side and now the pressing team triggering in to try and lock the play into one side of the field by making a curved run by manipulating the players
8:11 the rest of the players in the middle of field to basically once that ball is to one side get it locked there so they can't switch what this tactic does is it
8:18 kind of breaks that because now you're starting to play with the ball to the center who now has options to dribble move whatever they want and it forces
8:28 the pressing team to resp the fact that you can go in either direction at our level at 9v9 a lot of times what it does is it pulls the pressure into the middle
8:37 relieving pressure from the wide areas if you have two pressures on the ball you can see here in the graphic they're basically 16 yards or less away from
8:47 your two center backs so if you play that ball from a goalkeeper to the center back that pressure is coming straight upon them and perhaps the shortest window they could possibly have
8:58 that makes it very difficult ult to them now you can count to that by pushing your center backs further and further wider and if the pressing team does that
9:05 it gives you an even easier window to play straight up the middle but you can't be afraid of playing up the middle but by playing from your Center back to
9:12 your keeper it makes the pressing team respect the fact that that keeper can now go in any direction they could even dribble the ball if they want to but it
9:21 usually pulls the pressure into the middle of the field which then relieves the pressure on the outside so you play that ball into the keeper your center
9:30 backs start to spread out your Wingers maybe drop down and now as the pressure comes towards the keeper because those kids are just coming straight at him he
9:39 just plays the ball simply out wide maybe your Center back takes a step or two forward and leaves them in his wake or her awake behind them and now you've
9:47 bypassed two players and now you've have that Advantage again now you're looking at a Midfield where you have four to five players against there three or usually two if you count the center and
9:58 one side the field and you can move your play forward additionally if we're playing against this hypothetical 332 when the keeper has the ball they have lots of options they can clip a ball in
10:09 any direction and mix it up so if your wide players come down the check into the ball and they're not tracked playing that quick ball out wide just bypasses
10:20 again those Center two players and now they are One V one and with support around them are usually 3v1 or 4v2 sometimes even 5v2 going going up one
10:29 side of the field so having the ability to mix it up and to use that short option to be able to go from the edge of an of the six-yard box to the keeper on
10:39 the initial pass just mixes up the event enough that it causes indecision from the pressing team they're not quite sure where to go once you've executed this a
10:49 few times and it should make your life easier as the game progresses lastly you may have a team that really does a good job at being restrained in that pressing
10:58 and they try to go man for man or girl girl when that Center back has the ball it's important to know that your six can come down into the box to create a
11:08 passing angle and triangle there between the two pressing players it's usually very effective because it's a very short Quick Pass they're able to turn and go out so if that Center back doesn't have
11:18 the options that you see here to be able to play out wide and then pass into the middle to the middle eight is blocked off the six dropping into the box to
11:27 create a shorter passing angle there is a very effective option they usually can pick that ball up and again once they beyond the pressure the pressure is
11:35 coming from behind if they get foued from behind it's an easy call for the ref but most of the times they're able to take a touch out of their feet take a
11:43 few steps into the Midfield and their whole world opens up now we've got a team that's pressing with three maybe you're playing against a 323 or maybe
11:50 you've been playing out of the back they started with one or two players and now the team is starting to creep up because you keep doing it to them and now they
11:59 just think oh I can keep throwing players forward three is very daunting to look at but is not as difficult as you may look at it because in most
12:09 formations you play against that means that that Midfield has been emptied so in this circumstance we got a 323 in this example if they've taken their three forwards they wide players in
12:19 their Striker and they've pressed it up AC against the top of the 18 that means unless they're vacating their defensive line they've got two players in the
12:28 Midfield usually your four players and if you include your six five it's an easy overload to get there in fifth and sixth grade it should be easy enough to
12:38 play that mediumly medium long ball to a wide player checking in and forcing the issue if the wide midfielders start covering the wide players or even if
12:49 their wide center backs start covering that now you've got one V one at your nine you should be able to bounce a ball up the middle of the field and bypass
12:57 all that and least let them have to deal with a 1V one bouncing ball heading towards their goal with their back having to be turned to play you have
13:06 lots of options but to play the short passes you can either start with the keeper or start with the center back like we looked at at the two-player
13:16 press the idea here is you're just looking for that angle to find that player in the middle and a lot of times it's the six just sliding over slightly
13:24 into a window between two of the pressing players that the center back has an easy pass to play goes from The Keeper to the center back the pressure
13:31 starts to come in and he just plays the ball through that Gap past them and now that six has turned and you've cut three players out of the press and are going
13:41 forward so while that rushing of three players can be very intimidating looking it's actually not as effective as it should be because you're just you've emptied your Midfield in order to do
13:54 that 9v9 even if a team is playing A 233 and they keep three players in the Midfield that means your Striker sitting up near the top of the box over the top
14:03 of all that is 2v one and usually 1 V One play that long ball every once in a while there's nothing wrong with it but take a look at what they're doing and
14:12 most of the time your Midfield should have tons of space and now you're making them make choices do they cover the middle of the field or the wi power of
14:20 the field because they can't do both in this situation lastly you can also choose to if this is a common occurrence you can choose to invert your field on
14:29 your goal kicks so you can see here my six has gone forward and the two eights have dropped down and now each eight is sitting in between and outside the
14:38 windows those three pressing players have it's now again very much like the two players pressing where you play right up the middle to them to the six
14:47 now you've got two options to play to the eight beyond the press and let them turn and go because again you're' probably outnumbered them in the Midfield at least 3v2 and closer to 5V
14:59 to take advantage of that fact invert your players so that they have two choices and then turn around and play forward lastly you could always choose to then take your center backs and play
15:11 them even further out wide it's going to do one of two things it's even going to take the pressure and spread them out further across the top of the box giving
15:20 you more window space to get that ball into the Midfield or if they stay compact it's going to give those wide players a little bit more time and and
15:29 some different angles to play balls into the middle or play balls forward as I receive that ball a little bit further outside so manipulating your angles by
15:38 manipulating where your players stand can just help your team find where that window is that they can play the pass through and up lastly let's look at a
15:47 slightly different situation here's a team playing similar to the formation I like to play they're playing a 341 and they've basically chosen to go man for man or girl for girl all across the
15:58 field at except at where they're pressing they're pressing with one player they've chosen to take their Ford midfielders and try and taking both my wide players out and my two eights in
16:08 the middle of the field so what this has as an effect is you have to look at where your strength is on this and your strength is once again at the bottom of
16:16 the field you are 4v1 you're in a 4v1 Rondo situation Advantage situation with one presser four of your players and you have to use that to your advantage to
16:27 move past the Press move up towards these players that playing 1 V one and turn those 1 V ons into 2 v1s or 3v tws and how you do that is when you play
16:37 that ball out wide if you can take your space past that pressure with that 4v1 advantage in the middle and now head towards your players who are being manm
16:45 marked it now breaks the manm marking because are they going to choose to come to the player with the ball or are they going to stay with the player they were
16:53 marking on the goal kick and as soon as they have to make that choice your players are at the advantage cuz now it's playing a 2V1 if one of your other
17:01 players joins in now it's a 3v2 again you're trying to find that overload as you go forward but you start if you think about it you're starting the
17:09 situation in the best circumstance possible you are 4v1 Rondo between your keeper your two center backs and the six in this case use that to your advantage
17:17 break that pressure and force the other team to leave them one V one marking so that becomes an advantage for you at 2V1 or further so how do I hit my teams work
17:29 this out so a lot of times we play a lot of attack and defend games and usually we're attacking um in this situation it's not defending so much but we're in
17:38 a defensive shape on a goal kick and what we do is we work through the permutations so you can see here I've got a team set up to play out of the
17:45 back in my formation and I've got a half a field to practice on which is you know relatively typical and I've got nine 10 I've got all my players here for example
17:55 I've got a roster of 13 so everybody's here if you have less numbers you can start to get rid of players you can get rid of a striker here you can substitute
18:03 in as a keeper with the distribution but the important part is you're looking to train this group of players to understand their options so we do the
18:15 permutations what happens if there's one player pressing and the ball comes out here I'll purposely pick my fastest nastiest player to be the pressing player when we're learning because I
18:28 want to have the maximum difficulty in a training environment so a lot of times I'll pick one of my Strikers because that's what they do in a game and no
18:36 mercy try and go for it but early on I may basically say you're going for shadow play here you're going to press but you're not trying to take away the
18:44 ball we're just trying to learn the actions but I will set this up and either let it play or at least talk through the permutations of like hey
18:54 when the ball goes here as this player comes in what are your options what can you do to help this player this player may come down this player
19:01 might drop in or come here this player might go here and so the idea is we work through the options and then we practice it we have the keeper with a bunch of
19:09 balls they play out to the different options we rotate our players through the different places that they might play in so that everybody gets a chance to do it and we do it with one and then
19:21 what do we do we do it with two and now we work on do we start the ball here we start the ball here and it goes here what does
19:31 that look like can we play up through the six and then once that's happened you've got options ahead of you in all sorts of directions can you take the ball
19:42 directly and can the six go away and find a pocket of space where they can receive this ball by passing these two make a quick turn and find a play out to
19:51 go that way we'll spend time just working through the permutations working on all the technical details what is that body shape look like for this player and this player what is the body
20:01 shape for this player do you want them facing the goal or do you want them on a sideway stance so they can track to see where that pressure is coming from same
20:10 with these players all around getting body shape right passing making sure they're receiving on the back foot so this ball comes to this player they're not stopping it on their inside foot but
20:20 they're on their outside foot so they can take that touch away and now they've options to play out you can work on those technical skills along with the
20:29 Tactical formation because it needs one to be successful in the other and then lastly of course we do the more difficult one where we put all put three
20:38 players up maybe we get a player or a coach in the midfield if we don't have enough players to cover all the bases sometimes maybe you just work on one
20:47 side of the field and make it even harder for these players because you don't have enough players to have a an extra Winger on the outside but now we
20:53 do the same thing we play with the ball what are our options what do you you see and that's the other piece of it is we're teaching our players to react to
21:01 what they see do you see three players sitting on the top of the line then what do you do two or one or as you see in a
21:10 lot of the video options a lot of player teams they just don't know what to do with the press and as they sit back because your team is able to play out
21:21 through pressure when team sit back expecting a long ball it's the easiest thing for your team at that point because there's no pressure on them they can play that short pass and they can
21:30 play their permutations and they just play up and out it's not that hard it really isn't especially 9v9 it can be relatively simple against a team who's
21:38 expecting the long ball does that mean never play The Long ball no it doesn't you need to mix things up but I'm still going to say it's
21:48 probably 7030 8020 maybe even 9010 in terms of percentages CU a long ball with these kids at this age to can't head the ball it's still difficult to control
21:59 some of those bouncing balls on some of the types of fields we play on which are not great or even Turf isn't great either because the ball bounces way too
22:06 much difficult to control it's not to say that you can't play that long ball every once in a while whether it's direct from your keeper or after a pass
22:13 to keep them honest but you'll have a ton more luck if you keep the ball under control and can play those short passes lastly I talked about some of the things
22:23 I do to help my players be comfortable with this and one of the most important things that I do is I do do a lot of possession games and most possession
22:31 games look similar to what I have going on in the penalty area now I'll I'll beg you coaches do not practice in the penal area it's the area that gets the most
22:39 wear and tear it's just convenient for me to do this on the board because there are lines it might be convenient for you as well but you're going to destroy your
22:46 field don't do that pick someplace else however usually it's some sort of mixed team in the middle so it's 3b3 in the middle and in this case I have two
22:55 neutrals on the outside and literally the idea is the ball gets tossed in and the blue players are trying to play from one end to the other back and forth and
23:04 keep it under control if they lose possession and the green gets it they now take over and start going and it's non-stop it doesn't stop you can do lots
23:13 of different options you could place a third player if you have them because you have a odd number that day and they could be a neutral so they are part of
23:21 whoever has the ball you can make this area long and narrow you can make it Square you can make it round you can make it try you can do whatever you need
23:31 to do to manipulate the environment that's part of the fun of this but start with an area that maybe is a little bit bigger so your team has some success and
23:39 then slowly Crank That space down and what you'll see along with your guidance is they start to figure out how to play without the ball to get in the spaces to
23:49 support their teammates to be comfortable Under Pressure we play this uh very often you can see here we're playing it on a gym floor we play this
23:59 in usually a space that's probably less than half of the size of the penalty area we usually warm up over here in the side of the field um type of deal and
24:08 you know if I have six eight 10 players will'll do that for a good 15 minutes almost every practice we do it in warm-ups before games as part of our
24:17 warm-up routine but it's again you're activating that motion that Vision that speed of play again start with a field size that's appropriate for the level of your players and I promise you
24:29 eventually you'll be able to start to shrink that space to make them think and move and react faster and they will get better at it so I hope that you found
24:39 this video useful and it's giving you some ideas on how you can play out of the back it is a vital skill your kids have to learn it and if they didn't
24:48 learn it in 7v7 either because you didn't know about it or you inherited a team it's not too late but it takes some effort it takes some planning but also
24:57 being able to give those kids a structure so that they understand what they're going to do so many teams I play against they've clearly never thought about practicing how to play out from
25:08 the back they just line up in their position and expect them to know where to go where to play the past and if you have watched any of my game videos uh
25:18 you can see that that usually ends in chaos they the other teams they just they don't know what to do because no one's shown them what their options are
25:26 and what the structure is and it turns into to a free-for-all which usually means the team who's playing against them that has a little bit of structure
25:34 eats their lunch just that ball never gets out of the half and it comes right back at them again so I hope this is valuable please like subscribe comment
25:43 share let me know if there's some other specific thing we'll take a look at some more game video but until the next time I appreciate all your efforts thanks so
25:57 bye e
