0:00 well hello coaches out there coach KW back here again for another exciting video today's episode we're going to take a look at some live video examples of playing out of the back from my team
0:10 and some teams we played against so we can take a look at what it looks like in real life it's really easy and clean when you draw it up on the board or on
0:18 the computer and do all those diagrams but then you stick those third and fourth graders into the mix and anything can happen so we're going to take a look at some actual video
0:27 examples of my team in this past year as well as a couple examples of some of the teams played against to compare and contrast to see what they were doing and
0:36 how they were doing it and what worked and what didn't if you haven't seen my playing out of the back videos there some of my more popular content I'll
0:44 link them in the description go back but we'll do a quick overview for now okay so in 7v7 we play the 1231 formation again I have a video on
0:53 why I think this is the best one for training players to get to the next level in 9v9 and 11 v11 keeper has the ball we have our Center back split at
1:01 the edges of the box kind of deep we've got our 7 and 11 wide and high to start our eight should be in the middle of the
1:09 field splitting it in my league the buildout line is the halfway line some leagues it's another line painted here similar concept just the line of Confrontation will be a little closer a
1:19 little further the key Point here I wanted to make is you'll see in the video lots of times the strikers think they have to stay on this side of the
1:26 line because that's where all these bodies are from the other team what I'd like to see is my Striker to find a pocket of space between this line
1:35 of Confrontation and the center backs so that they pass this line so once that first pass comes in if we can play over the top and in behind we can but again
1:44 we'll take a look at those video examples and see what happens as we have our teams here so again quick overview I really do insist on having the ball
1:52 start at the middle of the box so that there is no bias to one side of the field to the other and we'll see some examples where other teams do that and
1:59 what happens okay so we're going to play our ball out wide to our Center back we want our Winger to make a move to find Space most of the time it'll be coming
2:08 down the line as the pressure comes in to increase this angle but it could be that if this player doesn't track this player they might be able to go in and
2:15 behind but either way this strike this Winger has the freedom to move around on this side we have our eight to slide over our Striker to slide over and the
2:26 idea here is if they take their space they should have at at least three options going forward before they have to think about going back and out the
2:34 other side the other mechanism that I teach usually at the end of third grade or the beginning of second of fourth grade is using this player here where
2:44 they play a pass into here that acts like a bounce pass where now as the pressure comes into the middle they have an easy pass out to one of the center
2:52 backs who has an easy pass out to one of the Wingers since the pressure has moved forward and they byass that pressure I don't have a great video example of that
3:01 one unfortunately um but I do have an example where we play that and the center mid they do something unexpected and I'm not sure if they were trying to
3:09 do it on purpose or not but we'll take a look at that video and see how it goes so that's a really quick overview of playing out of the back 7v7 in this
3:16 style so we're going to look at the computer we're going to see what we have to look at in terms of real video examples that I recorded if you're
3:23 looking to figure out how I recorded these examples I just made a video a couple of weeks ago on how to do that using a GoPro and stuff like that so
3:32 take a look at that video but before we go I'm gonna ask which I don't always ask but I'm going to ask up front if you've been watching this video and
3:39 you've liked what I've done in the past and you haven't subscribed which is about 80% of My Views has not subscribed could you do me the favor and just hit
3:47 the Subscribe button it helps unlock some features in YouTube that will allow me to do new and more interesting things as we go forward and just will help me
3:55 out so if you found any value to any of the content you've seen here it's free it's easy it's simple hit the Subscribe button um I really appreciate it uh
4:04 you've been sharing with your fellow coaches and I'd suggest you keep doing that if you find it useful but if you're watching this video and you haven't
4:11 subscribed please just do me a favor it'd be a huge uh help for me and a thank you to me for for all this content that I'm trying to create and put out
4:20 there for you so let's go to the computer and watch some video okay okay let's take a look at a few of these video examples real quickly and
4:29 we'll go through them one at a time so let's take a look at really a clean one here so we'll pull this video up we'll drag this timeline back so here you can
4:40 see oh look at that we got some uh let's clear all that what we've got here is we've we've got a goal kick here and so now here's our basic setup and it looks
4:49 pretty much like what we just looked at on the Whiteboard the ball is in the center again that's where I like it to be here's my two center backs you'll see
4:58 there's a little tendency it's going to be this same player in a lot of the clips and they're a little bit too high and we'll see how that works out in the
5:04 long run here's one of my wide players is the other little fuzzy here has my Center mid pretty decent positioning because it allows him to come close if
5:14 need be now we talked about the nine I would rather see this nine somewhere back here because I want to get them past this first line of pressure we're
5:24 playing a team that's playing a 33 and on goal kicks it looks like they were that to bring this player up and closer but we're going to play this one through
5:33 this one's pretty classic it's a pretty clean version of it so we'll hit play play goes out to the left a little bit interesting makes that pass straight up now would we have liked
5:46 that pass to go straight or maybe wider yes but in the end it works out these are fourth graders they do make mistakes you can see here the only bits I might
5:57 complain about a little bit is I'd like to see this Center back move up a little quickly and again if this Striker here had started with a deeper starting
6:07 position these two players wouldn't be so close in the same line and we see our player here has starting to make his run into this back post so this looks really
6:14 clean and really good as they go forward because he's run into pressure you can see now a common issue with players like this is this player here and the striker are in the same
6:27 line I'd really like to see this player here kind of in front of the referee so now this player has some depth between the striker and himself and if I play
6:37 this through you'll see that the ball is literally going to go across in a line in the passing because they are so close to each other and they're in the same
6:44 line so you pass to there same line pass to there tries to cut it back look at all the players in the middle and then they finally get it back out wide and we
6:52 move down the field but a pretty clean breakout in that example a pretty classical example of what it looks like on the screen let's take a look
7:02 at when we are um if we need to switch to play now again this one is not classic in the way that we would instruct it to do but it works out so
7:13 here we are here's our players again really would like my Striker same kid this is all from a relatively quick sequence of plays here I'd really love
7:22 to have him a little bit deeper uh as you'll see but my wide players are pretty good again this player really should be down down here and this player
7:31 they did not get where he needs to be he should probably be over here but that's just picking on everything here we play this ball it goes out here now stop now
7:42 you can see here this time on the Press got a player covering here we've got this player here really cutting off the pass this way I would love this player
7:56 to have dropped in he's still learning that Center mid role and he could be a little bit static at times and this back here I actually am okay
8:07 with him moving in sooner than the second pass because any good Defender the first thing that should be going on in their mind is what's the worst that
8:14 can happen and he can see here he's got players all in his face and he's now looking to maybe go this way he also this player also has a tendency to try
8:23 to play 1 V one sometimes here when that's not the place to do it so he's coming in the cover cu the worst thing that happen is this player gets the ball
8:30 and has a clean run at the keeper so what's going to happen here is this player is going to instead of turning around and playing back so that we can
8:41 then play out this way as we've trained he's now going to try and switch this and he he's confident in his ability to try and play this ball long and he gets
8:49 away with it even though you'll see that the other player comes kind of close to sniping it off but here we go he pulls inside now he plays that ball long it
8:58 gets through and now we're up and forward so again not necessarily a classical way of how to switch the field there but again starting to feel these
9:08 players in fourth grade St and to feel their oats a little bit feeling like hey I can make that play and he pretty much did so congrats to him for trying it if
9:16 it went wrong we were in a good shape this Defender was there that the uh Winger happens to be pretty quick could put some pressure in and we would have
9:23 been okay probably but again it's never as clean as what it looks like on the screen there I'd love to show you here what I really impress upon my players
9:37 and it's part of the same training here's a save watch what this looks like as soon as my keeper has the ball watch what my team does what shape do we have we already
9:49 have player here player here this player heading out this way this player heading out this way here's my Center mid and here's my Striker who hasn't got up yet
10:01 so even on uh keeper clearances uh redistributions this is important to get your team to realize it's not just goal kicks as soon as the keeper has the ball
10:12 whether it's passed back to them or they've made a save or they've collected the ball the team needs to reshape need to find their shape make the field big
10:21 so then they have all these options so I'm super proud you know these kids do a great job in terms of like it's the same sort of concept he plays in just uh he
10:30 kind of double hit it when he went to pass it to him and it hit his left foot again fourth grade they make mistakes but a good setup I mentioned that I
10:39 would talk about what happens if we play to the center now this is not my classic terms of way to play but again here we go we've got our players they've hit
10:50 their shape I like where my center backs are this time he's a little bit deeper than usual we've been playing wide a couple of times and the St the get wider
10:59 and wider although right now if he was to look up he should have seen all six of the players basically within this inside of the circle like here's a point
11:09 where you could take a shot and play a ball direct again but I let them make the choice but here what's going to happen is he's going to play into the
11:17 eight now usually what I tell my players is if the ball is on this side of your body then you just simply play the ball this direction if the ball happened to
11:27 be on this side you played in this direction because you can see all the pressure is coming straight into him this way which leads obviously these players in acres of
11:39 space now in this case I'm not sure if he tried to do this on purpose or not but instead of playing back he opened his foot a little bit too much and he
11:48 just played tried to play straight out to there and it basically worked uh again I love that the inventiveness there he thought he saw that there was
11:57 lots of space there and maybe he saw something earlier what I don't love and this is what we'll go back to and look at real quickly and this is where I
12:04 would say to him hey what is it that we want to do our body shape here for this player is not okay because he's Square he's basically looking straight at the
12:16 keeper so he can't see what's behind him what I tell my players and you should tell your players too look at my wide players all of them their body shape is
12:25 they're turn sideways so they can see both where the ball is coming from and if they turn their head simply they can look this way this player he can only
12:33 look across this plane he this is what he can see right cuz if he turns his head quickly he can't see behind him what I'd rather him is to be standing so
12:42 he has his body sideways because the ball's coming and then that way he could see where the pressure was coming from he could easily turn his head and see
12:51 here and see directly to this player and maybe play that pass a little bit cleaner as it comes up here so here it goes pops it out there
13:00 that player has to come back a little bit which you know to be fair maybe we say should be up there as well I will make one quick comment here about
13:08 positioning I would love again this is getting late in the game actually no I take that back it was not late in the game this player needs to move more
13:16 quickly here this player took his own sweet time to get here so now this player is isolated with no support this player should be here at this point
13:25 being an option for this player to be able to play back and through and and of course my keeper should be yelling and pushing everybody up and he should be
13:32 landing himself at the top of the box you can see this player is keeping his width and staring the head in this way my Striker and senid once again are too
13:41 close to each other this player really should be coming here or making a run down or this player should be making a run down so they keep this space in here
13:49 but again all a learning proposition one thing I would like to look at here is what happens a lot of times when our Keepers try to hurry up
14:03 and play and want to play long I made a video for one of my Keepers in one of the games where we were down a goal and
14:09 he thought I need to just get the ball up try to pick off a solo player for a run down he tried it and I have the
14:16 clips he tried 15 times he lost the ball 12 times because they can't head at this age they can't control a ball that's thrown at them and in our league if you
14:26 throw the ball over the halfway line it's supposed to be whistle blown indirect kick for the other player now one of my assistant coaches happened to be my kid my older kid was the ref
14:36 didn't necessar catch that but a more experienced ref or a regular ref we had a no-show um would know this but if you see here real quick he makes the save my
14:46 team is starting to go into their shapes you can see center backs pulling here and he's calling for it this Center back is this way you see this Winger starting the
14:56 head this way you see this Winger starting the head this way into to all this open space my Center bid is there and look my Striker is in a really good
15:03 spot however he's tempted by this the keeper when he plays this ball he tries to throw it over the top can't head it what does he got to do he's got to duck
15:15 out of the way now the ref should have called that for being thrown over the halfway line but now Ball's over the top he can't get a hold of it and we lose
15:23 the ball so that's why I really insist on putting the ball down and trying to play that ball short and quickly I understand at this point of the game we
15:32 were down a couple of goals couple of fluk goes we ended up winning this game 4 to2 uh we had pretty much control of the game all the time there was just two
15:39 fluke goals that happened as it will in third and fourth grade soccer he was in a hurry thinking oh I can get a breakway really 20 to 30% of the time so
15:49 if you've got a keeper that does that have an assistant coach make a tally board and just mark down quietly every time they try to go longer than just
15:58 playing it to the simple pass and try to go for that home run ball you'll see how many times it's why I do not allow punting almost at all from my players
16:07 because you can't H it the field is so short the only time I'll let them punt it is if they've been working on their side foot punt uh and this here is my
16:15 son who sometimes plays keeper he's really good at the side foot Punt and so he can take that ball here and if one of these players is out wide he can drive
16:23 that ball low and play it in a way that this player can control it with his legs or his chest and play it out there but we do not have any of that high punting
16:32 going on because if it goes over the halfway line it gets blown right back let's take a peek now at when your players don't get deep enough those two
16:43 center backs we talked about that one Center back was uh always short you can see now my team is down this other end of the field we're getting set up and
16:53 it's kind of a warm day it's getting later in the game I think the kids are getting tired but think you can see if you take a look at this this player
17:01 Center back is a little high this Center back which is my youngest is really high again we've got good shape here we could get good shape here my Center mid is a
17:11 little high again I'd love my Striker to be somewhere over here something to work on but what you're going to see is we're going to try and switch because we get
17:19 pressure and he made this player makes a bad decision and then it gets compounded by the positioning that's going on here so we'll take a look at what happens
17:27 when we're a little too high he plays it out now here he should have let the ball roll across him because he's got lots of space and time but instead he takes his
17:36 touch to the inside for what reason we'll never know right let's get rid of that he plays that ball to him now look at his starting position the pass was in
17:45 front of him a little bit but now he was almost at the top of the box these pressers are now 15 yards away and now we're in scramble mode right makes a
17:55 good block he kind of puts his body in between the uh thing Play Keeper we get a we got a a a call for running into the
18:02 keeper but you know we were lucky to get away with that one so again having that good position to give yourself time so even if you do want to switch that ball
18:10 from one side of the field to the other that play is deep enough that you still have the time because of the space that goes across there let's take a look at
18:19 the other team real quickly so here's one of the reasons why I insist on the ball being at the center of the goal area this player typical fashion for a
18:29 lot of teams puts the ball on the corner my team immediately knows it's going to this side so let's go and do our usual press and if you watch my pressing video
18:39 you're going to see this in action pretty well here we're going to play this ball roll this video forward he plays it forward now look here exactly
18:48 as I would want them to do my Winger stays with his Winger so now this play that's been they've been trying all day is not on they have no option to play
18:57 there so now this kid should be playing into here but that and this pressure is coming this way but instead they try and force that pass an easy pickoff and if that pass
19:09 right there was a little bit better waited you can see my player has a clean shot in on that so again playing from the corners telegraphs everything that
19:19 you're about to do put that ball in the center and don't give it away before it happens there's one more example here where it's again this team is
19:28 disorganized they're playing a 33 it's later in the game they went from being up 2-0 to now losing 4 to2 it's late in the game and you can see here they're
19:38 playing a 33 there's a sub coming on and off right there's a player that's just walking off the field so he doesn't know what's going on here but now you can see
19:47 right like there is no there's a 3 three somewhere on this field but really there isn't um ball comes out my team is now gotten used to them just punting the
19:57 ball so you can see they're all just parked on their markers they're like go ahead play that long ball towards us right he comes up plays the ball we
20:08 have a whole bunch of players now in this middle of the field and it's a quick and easy turnover so having that structure uh when you're doing this is
20:16 super important well coaches I hope you found that interesting and helpful to see real world examples it's clearly not as pretty and clean as when we draw it
20:24 up on a whiteboard or in a little diagram software kids are mess they make mistakes they make interesting choices when they do things but that's okay that's part of learning the game and
20:35 every time they do it it reinforces what works and what doesn't work and again it gives you some things to work on in your practices so that you can reinforce
20:45 those things because again we're training all these different movements and positions imagine that formation now 11 V1 so now those aren't seven and 11 Wingers but the two and three fullbacks
20:57 playing out if you watch any soccer on TV you'll immediately recognize that shape of the back four in most teams sometimes they even Preston like this with maybe one or even
21:10 two midfielders in the middle here we all recognize that shape it starts at 7v7 with those skills working on that over and over again that team there that
21:21 7v7 team is moving to 9b9 next year with the field that's twice as big their ability to control the ball to play for Ward and backwards as a team on the 9v9
21:31 field is going to be a huge Advantage because they will not be running up and down the field chasing the game all the time because in 9v9 you can't play a
21:40 basketball game like 7v7 is it's just not possible for these kids they can't run that much they find that out really quickly being able to have that shape
21:49 and structure so that you can play that ball in and amongst and move yourself up the field slowly and controlled is a huge benefit when you get to the big
21:58 feel at 9v9 111 again if you found any value in this video please uh ask again hit that subscribe button hit the Thumbs Up Button share it with other coaches I
22:09 know it's for me it's the summertime so maybe uh you know taking a break getting ready we just finished uh sending out try out notifications which is always a
22:18 joy uh maybe I'll make a video on that if uh you want to make some comments that would be fantastic so till next time I hope all you coaches are well and
22:28 whether it's in season or out of season that you're taking care of yourself until next time I'll see you bye
