0:00 hello coaches and welcome back it's uh coach KW here for another exciting episode today in episode 11 we're going to talk about pressing and counter pressing pressing is the act of trying
0:11 to win the ball back uh in that transition phase when you've lost the ball where you don't have the ball we're going to take a look at those transition
0:19 moments we're going to look how we can be structured on restarts from the opposition and we're also going to look at counter pressing what to do if we had
0:26 the ball and we lost it in the attacking third how that works and how you can work to uh train your team to work on that so let's get into the graphics now
0:35 sorry for the interruption but coach KW here asking would really help the channel if you would subscribe hit the Thumbs Up Button hit the notification and more importantly share this content
0:45 with other coaches if it's helped you even a little bit it helps the channel grow and helps other coaches find this information the goal really here is to
0:53 make sure that every kid gets the best soccer education they can get and I could use your help with that thanks okay okay let's take a look at 7v7
1:01 pressing in the opposition half so what is a press a press or the is the act of putting pressure on the ball to try to win the ball usually in the opposition's
1:10 half of the field the Press is usually triggered by events could be a goal kicker of the restart a throwin or a save by the opposition keeper or it
1:19 could be triggered by loss of possession in the other half and then some event that happens which we'll take a look at that triggers your team to put pressure
1:27 on in a coordinated method now obviously when we're in our own half without the ball we are applying pressure because we're defending but defending pressure is different from pressing at the front
1:39 and that's what we're going to look at so first thing we're going to look at is goal kicks it's a common occurrence and a prime opportunity to use a coordinated
1:47 press you have to move back to the buildout line whether that's the halfway line or the other line and it's one of these few areas where you can pre-plan
1:55 because the game is stopped you can get into your shape and then you can do the same thing thing over and over and over again this version is simplified the
2:02 first version we show you because everybody has a dedicated job there's no decisions really to be made so let's take a look in this picture we're playing against a team that plays like
2:11 us that playing in the 1 two 31 keeper has the ball 71 are wide we've got our 8- n centrally and our four and five are staggered keeping an eye on the center
2:21 of the field here the jobs are pretty simple the Y players the seven and 11s mark their opposite person so Winger to Winger as we've said many times those
2:30 players very much operate 1 V one in much of the game and in this case this is exactly what they do they Mark those players so that they take away the wide
2:40 option the four and the five they maintain Central superiority over that nine so it's a 2V1 there the nine is your pressure their job is to make a
2:52 curving run towards the ball and the eight their job is to fill the space to kind of cover the middle keeping an eye on the eight but but not overc
3:00 committing so much as to be able to be bypassed by a ball their job is to cover space so see you can see here the ball's moved out to the four the nine is on its
3:11 way the S and 11 have moved to those players but no further and the eight is pretty much arrived where they need to be as the nine arrives hopefully they've
3:20 curved that run in as they come in this way by curving the run in you basically cut the field in half because you basically are showing this player this direction as
3:32 you come in from this direction and so now what's left for this player is they can play back through the keeper into the five but now at least we've taken
3:42 away if you've cut the field off and this nine can get themselves in a decent position it puts this player in a difficult position where they either
3:49 Force the play into the 11 or they try to force the play up here if the nine tries to move over but you'll notice that our four and fives have pushed up
3:56 and out cuz once this pass is made no longer is this player on side remember if you go back to our offside presentation you can't be offside on a
4:05 goal kick when the keeper kicks the ball directly but as soon as another player plays it now offside isn't play so now by pushing these players up this player
4:15 becomes neutralized so even if they wanted to play this long ball over the top this player is offside so again the goal is to limit their ability with the ball to have an
4:25 easy out option out right by controlling the Press every player has a job and it is not just the charge of the ball this is where we don't want to be that team
4:33 that has The Charge of the Light Brigade where two or three players are just running really nearly at the ball because it's so easy to bypass as we've
4:40 seen as we've looked at our how to play out the back 7v7 you take away those wide players to either force a pass into them that's then a difficult job for
4:49 them to turn or you get the ball to come into the middle where you have more numbers you're using the speed from your nine to get into the back half of the
4:56 opposition and cut the field in half by making that curved r forcing them to play to one side now there is an advanced version of this press that requires your eight and nine
5:06 to now work as a team and we're going to take a look at that right now so same setup for the most part except instead of the eight and the nine especially the
5:15 nine really kind of hanging out in the center area so they have the shortest path now we're taking the eight and nine and we're spreading them to basically
5:22 either side of the circle or if you're looking down the field either side of the six the idea here now is these two players are interchangeable if the ball
5:31 goes to the four then it's The Nine's job the press and the Eight's job the cover if the ball goes to the five they now switch rolls now the eight becomes
5:40 the nine and they go after the ball and the nine becomes the eight and they cover so here in this situation when the ball's gone to this side the eight is
5:49 now basically become the nine and the nine has become the eight taking away of the central error while the eight presses on the ball again we see our
5:56 wide players 1 V one and our center backs two V1 if the ball went to the other side then they switched the nine is the one that presses and the idea
6:06 here is that we're looking for the shortest path to the ball to either side of the field versus having one player stand in the center and having to go
6:15 here you can cut off a good three or four yards by having your players spread out and take on whatever way the ball goes so the eight and nine now
6:26 effectively swap positions and now they can be that and what's should be happening is since your teams are used to playing every position they now become the eight and nine for the rest
6:36 of that play until it's time for them to swap back whether it goes out of bounds or that it's able to swap back but they just now swap now the eight becomes the
6:44 nine and the nine becomes the eight interchangeable requires some experience and communication and again the advantage is the player nearest to the ball makes the Sprint de press now these
6:53 go kick rules work against more chaotic teams that play in different formations or play long ball so let's take look at this so here's a team a little less
7:03 structured they push their players up because they're going to play a long ball it's the same concept because when that Ball's kicked long your wide players are marking your wide players
7:12 your eight and your nine are right in here in the middle and your four and five are there to support them so when that ball goes long because it can't
7:18 cross the halfway line in the air it's going to start bouncing its way here making it very difficult to control if this player is now under pressure with
7:27 basically three players around them there's a real real good chance you're going to win this ball back and start the Counterattack as you go this way if
7:34 a team's lined up in the 33 the Press basically works the same way you've got your wide players here you've got 2V1 in the middle and now your Nine's applying
7:42 pressure and your Eight's trying to cut off this play to the middle so now this forces this four to either play back and usually teams that are in this formation
7:50 or this chaotic are not comfortable playing back through the keeper or now they're going to try and force that ball forward and which is an advantage for
7:58 your team now here's an important thing to note we can press when a keeper has distribution so if the ball goes out of bounds it's a goal kick everybody has to move back but
8:11 if the keeper picks up the ball from a save or just a collection your team has to learn that they do not have to retreat to the halfway line it's now
8:19 time to stay right where they are and apply pressure to that because again they can't kick or throw the ball over the halfway line in the air so it's
8:26 going to be somewhere between the halfway line and where they're standing and this is where you can again try and win this ball back early and and the
8:34 other piece that's really important here if the keeper puts the ball on the ground to play out because maybe they are mistaken and they think it's a goal
8:42 kick so they're going to put the ball down and take their time as soon as the ball's on the ground it's a live ball somebody needs to go press that ball and
8:49 try and get it because the keeper if they pick it up you're going to be awarded usually a free kick in my league it's an indirect free kick from the edge
8:56 of the Box in some leagues it's a PK so one way or another once that Ball's on the ground you want to go after it with your Striker usually because that again
9:06 that's their job so usually what I have my teams do is I have them back up just a little bit but they're in the same positions wide players on wide players
9:15 two Central players and a 2V1 in the middle here so now if this player just rolls it out or throws it out to one of these players we're in a great position
9:24 to get pressure on the ball wherever it is if they're getting ready to kick the ball long and the purple team is moving up the field then it's easy enough to just have
9:34 this team slowly move back as the other team moves forward knowing that they can't put it over the halfway line in the air so again have your players not
9:44 just Retreat automatically to the halfway line when the keeper has the ball in their hands after they've collected it they want to look at finding a way to have pressure and if
9:53 this player puts the ball on the ground thinking it's a goal kick that they're going to have time this player needs to get right on top of that try and just
9:59 poke it in the net so there's another type of press and that's usually when we've been attacking and we've lost the ball and that's called the counter press or as it's been
10:10 popularized by uh Jurgen klopp and Liverpool and Dortmund and some other teams it's called The gagan Press that's come out of Germany and it's a deliberate and coordinated effort to win
10:19 the ball back shortly after you lose the ball in possession when you're attacking so you were attacking you lost the ball in the other net or in the attacking
10:26 third and you want to try and get it back as fast as possible possible to restart the attack and it is a coordinated effort it's not just one
10:33 player so it requires awareness of all the team and it's triggered by something a Bad Touch by the other team or a bad pass or maybe the player having to turn
10:42 their back to chase the ball into the corner but when there's that trigger everybody should recognize it and communicate so here in this case Seven's going after the 11 1v1 and they lose the
10:54 ball so here's an perfect opportunity for your team to press the ball is behind the 11 they're having to turn their back to the field to go chase this
11:03 ball and so what should happen is that the seven should put immediate pressure on this player and that's good but the rest of the team has to react as well
11:12 the nine is now moved to basically manm Mark the four the eight is manm marking this player and the 11 actually loses their wide player and starts to come in
11:21 here because at this point they know there's no way seven is getting the ball from 11 right now their back is to play seven right on top of them the four is
11:31 pushed over here so if they just try to Wing that ball up the line they're there to get them what's important though is that the whole team reacts because if
11:40 the seven presses and everybody else stands still it now becomes much easier for this team to break through our press because they make one pass to the four
11:50 the four has no pressure and a Clear Sight right up the field to our nine and now we have four players cut out of the play and we've got a 3 V2 going the
12:00 other way same here the nine has lost the ball but the teammates are too far away to have an effective press and so there needs to be some awareness and
12:09 some communication so this nine definitely needs to put pressure on the ball but they're not going to go headlong into it expecting other players to go running in you don't want this
12:19 your seven and your 11 to try to come down to these players it's too far away you're not going to get enough pressure on here so if these players do go there
12:27 they're going to leave big gaps so instead what you want your team to do is just know that they have to drop off The Nine's going to put pressure to delay
12:35 the Counterattack and that's a principle of Defending is delay we'll look at that in another video they've basically come and made a good position here they'll try to win the ball back but they what
12:44 they really trying to do is give their teammates time to drop off and make this play now have to play out this way they've cut off that straight ball up
12:53 the middle they play it out the 11 now the seven can come down and now everybody's in a good position and then not in a position where this ball is
13:00 again being played over the top to the nine and they're now trying to cut through their center backs so in review pressing is the act of putting pressure
13:08 on the ball to try and win the ball usually in the opponent's half of the field it's a triggered event it's triggered either by a restart goal kick
13:17 or other restart throw in or save by The Keeper or it can be triggered by a loss of possession where then the opposing player is now in a position where they
13:26 don't have time to do the right thing they have their back to play they've made a bad touch they've made a bad pass and now they're scrambling to get the
13:35 ball that is a trigger for your team if they're in a good position to put pressure and swarm on the ball it's also a good point to make sure that if the
13:44 rest of the team isn't there that somebody can call them off whether that's the center backs who can see the field or the your number eight who
13:53 happens to be in a good spot whoever it might be but again more advanced topics but if your team can learn to work as a collective it's a team effort it's not
14:01 an individual one so coaches I hope you'll find that useful um restarts especially are one of the only times in soccer where you can pre-plan your activity uh or your
14:14 actions on your Fe the field just because the game is so chaotic otherwise um but having a good plan to press the ball on restarts will help your players
14:24 as they get older certainly as well because once the buildout line isn't in play anymore at 9v9 11 v11 the Press is going to become a really important phase
14:34 of the game and how you deal with it going forward is going to be an important part of how you try and win back that possession don't let them have
14:42 a free out of their Zone basically if you can keep that pressure on then you have a better likelihood of regaining the ball in a dangerous position for a
14:50 Counterattack so I hope this is helpful I hope that you can use this to inspire yourself to think of ways that you could train your team to do these things we'll
14:59 work on some lessons later on right now we're still covering the big topic subjects so until next time hope you and your team have a great time on the field
15:08 and we'll see you real soon
