well hello coaches welcome back coach KW here again for another 9v9 video this week this time we're looking at attacking in the 9v9 but first before we
get that uh a huge thanks to everyone who has subscribed recently really made a big jump after my last appeal we're at the time of recording 49 away from 1,000
so I'd love to be able to get to the th sub Mark and I could use your help so if you've been watching these and you haven't joined the uh Club why not just
uh hit that subscribe share hit the bell all the things that the kids say when they're talking about YouTube uh makes a big difference to me and the channel I'd
love to get to that thousand Market unlock some things and it's a cool number to get to uh in the almost year that I've been running this channel
couple other things I want you to just uh make a note of uh in this 9v9 series I do have a playlist uh there's four videos plus one or two that I've done
prior to this I'll have a link to that playlist down below my big uh focus is 7v7 they got a ton of videos on that CU honestly everything you need to learn in
soccer you can learn at 7v7 even 11 v11 I go back to those principles I even practice a lot of time 7v7 just because you can work on so many of the things
you need to do there's a playlist for that and lastly if you're relatively new to coaches again my goal is to help volunteer coaches at the community level
not the paid professional licenses lots of experience I'm trying to help the every guy and every girl uh get out there and Coach I have a ser series uh
playlist on big picture so really kind of theoretical in some regards but like how you think about the game and how you think about the game in terms of
coaching so it gives you a little bit more background so there's a playlist for that as well go back and watch some of those videos I've been doing this for
almost a year so there's uh more content there than even I expected so today we're going to look at attacking in the 9v9 we looked at uh two videos in
formation sort of things including what we eventually went to with my town and team and my team and why we changed we looked at playing out of the back and
playing out of the back transitions into attacking so we're going to take a look at attacking we're going to look at attacking in the shape that I use and
the whole idea here is while we're doing this hopefully you can see some parallels to what you may do if you got anything out of my formation videos the
biggest takeaway is the numbers don't mean all that much when you see my shape we could call it four different things it doesn't matter it's what the roles
and responsibilities are on the field and the biggest takeaway really is if you can communicate that you have a clear idea and your kids can understand it as you're chopping and changing with
kids in and out all the time with subs and they don't have to think so much to be able to execute that game plan then you're on your way to success and so
when we take a look at what we have we're really going to map this out in terms of the big principles of play that are out in soccer I'll throw this
graphic up I created this for one of my videos that are in that big picture series but here are the standard principles of play and so ER and the
things we're going to look at especially with our formation and what we think about when we're attacking in all ideas but 9b9 here you know penetration support with movement and creativity we
can train a lot of these things based on the shape and the roles of responsibilities that we give our kids so that we make sure we have multiple
passing options spacing and angles we're spreading out we're making the field big we're finding space and moving the ball all those things as part of those principles of play will apply no matter
what shape you ultimately deliver to your kids on the field but we're going to take a look at what I looked at we're going to look at a bunch of Graphics
clinical sort of like how would be ideal and then we're going to watch some game vide so we can see how messy it looks like with kids in their first season of
9v9 their first nine games ever and you can see what that looks like so let's jump in now we'll take a look at the graphics and then we'll get over to some
game video let's go okay so here we are in my shape that I bring my team into as we're in possession and moving up the field and as I said you could look at
the shape and you can describe it in a whole bunch of different ways could be a 323 could be a 215 it could be uh 2141 it doesn't really matter the point
is is we have a shape that is looking at those things we looked at on the principles of play we have width with the seven and 11 out wide we have depth
between the nine and the six and even the center back and we have support with the eights and the diamond in the middle of the field and the cent of backs with
the six and the keeper as a matter of fact all the way around so that we have support around the ball and with those three things we can work on penetration
and creativity to finish off the attack as we go forward one of the other videos I have in the big picture series that maybe you've missed is how to think
about dividing up the field and that's an important concept for coaches and tactical thoughts as you look at the game of soccer and it comes into play
even in Youth Soccer because it can help you decide what makes things effective and not effective and so here you can see in this graphic with this formation
I have players in all five of the channels we have the two wide channels the left on the right channel we've got that Center Channel and then we have
those two all important half spaces those are the spaces between those channels and if you're a you if you study the game those half spaces become incredibly important because they points
of areas of the field that Force Defenders to make choices are they going is the wide player coming inside is the central player going wide leaving space
and so with players in all those zones and then the ability to have players moving from one zone to another replace each other that's part of that movement
and creativity that really makes an attack effective you can see here in the formation when the ball's on the left side our defensive line is slid over so
we have support even behind a lot of times my wide players will play a pass back to that Central defend that defender on their side to reset the ball
when they can't go forward you can see here when the ball SL slides over to the other side it's the same concept we've got the defensive line sliding over
having that depth and support behind we have lots of players around the ball for lots of options and most importantly if we lose the ball we have lots of players
to counter press to try and win the ball back quickly to try and stifle any sort of Counterattack coming back the other way because we have a good shape and
formation around the ball with or without it as you can see here coming from playing out of the back all the different Pathways this ball can take
for all the different players when we're condensed and in a defensive shape and when we're transitioning out 9v9 transition is an important part but unfortunately a lot of 9v9 fields are
not to the dimensions that you're going to really officially find we're lucky in our town and make sure that the fields are a true 75 yards long but a lot of
places that you play in town soccer travel soccer they've tried to condense the fields to fit as many as they can in the spaces they have and maybe the
length of the field is nowhere close to the 75 so that transition can happen pretty quickly versus 11v 11 you've really got to work on those transitions
but in general there's really only three options you're playing the ball to the left or the right or down the center and so having that shape and knowing where
those Outlets are in transition to get the ball someplace up and out is really important part of that concept of moving the ball into the attack you're going
from your team being condensed and compact to expanding and making the field big you can see here we' moved the ball through a series of short passes to
the eight and you can see all the different options that they have whether they want to play the ball down the line to the seven whether they want to play
into the nine or even switch the field across the way whether it's directly or indirectly they have all those options you can see here if the ball is then
eventually played to the wide seven whether directly or indirectly they have again a ton of options they've got that supporting eight close by they can take their man on the dribble down the line
and try and stretch the field that way again they can try and play that through ball into the nine but it's having all those options or even turning around
playing that ball back to their Center back to be able to get out of danger if they're double teamed or triple teamed and need to hit a wall and turn around
and you can see again whatever formation the formation I have uses that six as that Center Point really to the game they quarterback but you can see
literally the web of support that happens in this way diamonds and triangles all over the field so that you can move possess and move around and attack in a way that you have structure
and you have support one of those things of support now I made a mistake in this graphic so I handrew it in your keeper is an important part of this as well if
your team is not comfortable yet playing the ball to the keeper with their feet you need to work on this so many times a ball goes back to one of the central
Defenders they have their back towards the opposition goal they're facing their own keeper they have somebody in their backside and instead of just playing the simple pass to the player who's wide
open 20 yards away from them they try to twist and turn and get away from the pressure that's behind them and either they lose the ball and now that player
is One V one against your keeper or they lose the ball out of bounds and now you've given away possession usually deep in your own end when all it takes
is a simple pass back to your keeper and you'll see in a couple of examples in the v game videos it's such an easy thing to do but so powerful but you need
to get them comfortable those keepers of yours they're playing the game only half the game in the field half the game in the in the net they're feet do not stop
working when they put the gloves on don't let that be a mental block to your team or to your parents or to yourselves and make sure they're involved in the
play even in the attacking zone so how do we work on that attacking uh shape and principles so we use a pretty basic setup that we can use for both attacking
and defending because we usually have a half of a field to ourselves and this setup is pretty Universal you can use it for lots of attacking drills and games
really we kind of just play them with this but you can do the same thing on the defensive side of the ball if you want to focus on defensive aspects you
might just take away a few attackers to have more Defenders I'll say again though as I said before when you're coaching a session you only coach on
side of the ball do not fall into the Trap of trying to coach the Defenders and the attackers at the same time if you're focusing on attack Let The
Defenders deal with their stuff themselves they need to hear the attacking points because they will be on the attacking side of the ball so do not fall into that track so here in this
attacking drill we've got two goals out wide as targets if the defensive team wins the ball coaches can also stand in for that to be players that receive it
you can see we have coaches in the middle delivering balls they also stand in for the two center backs in this particular formation so if you've got
two of you you an assistant coach you're kind of filling in that Gap behind the six in this particular formation in my formation as I've talked about before
that six becomes the quarterback they see the whole field have that key that they can either break up counterattacks as they go forward or if the team runs
into problems and the ball gets back to the six look at the all the options they have to them left right and Center it becomes a really really important part
of your game if you can get that you can see we have withth with the 7 the 11 we have that depth between the nine and the
six and again we have the eight there for support so we have all those components that are part of the attacking principles of play that deal with structure all we need is
penetration and creativity to finish off you can see here that we can bring in those lines for the half half spaces and the channels one of the more important
things you can do especially your first season 9v9 is to enforce the width of your wide players they want to come inside there is safety in numbers they
feel more comfortable and they feel more productive if they think oh I'm closer to the ball I'm here to help when that the opposite is true they need to get
outside and stay out there and maintain the width one of the ways I do this is very easy very quick successful to do is I physically mark off from the top of
the 18 up to the halfway line that line you can use a whole row of cones I actually use 100 foot ropes to pick up at Lowe's Home Depot whatever I lay
those ropes down and I say to them during these practices you cannot cross the line it is amazingly difficult for them to get past that because they so
much like a magnet want to get pulled into the middle of the field but it only takes a week or two to get them to be comfortable out there and to understand
how valuable they are that far out on the field especially in 9v9 it's still kind of a small goal you can pack the middle of the field to make it difficult
to get through the middle if you don't use the width once you use the width and you'll see that in some of the video examples it forces defenses to stretch
apart which makes room for your other attackers to get in the Middle where the goal scoring opportunities are and can put the ball on net now obviously you
can set up if you play teams with a back four you can do that you can even set up as a back five if you've got the players
or extra coaches assistant coaches no matter how many Defenders you put out there this is the general attacking shape or whatever it is that you may have as an attacking shape you can use
these attack and defend games to Now work on those principles and I'll suggest that early on when you're first getting at 9v9 the biggest principle you can work on as I said before is keeping
the width moving the ball from inside to outside and back to inside to stretch defenses to use the whole field to make room for your teams as your team gets
experienced you can start to work on other attacking principles we'll talk about that in a second you can see here using the channel markers one of the
things here is the nine and the eight on the left of swap spaces and this is something that will start to happen naturally but again one of these more
advanced topics as you go that you can teach your players that when one player moves out of the space another player can move into the space that's vacated
it's an attacking principle that makes it hard for players to get marked and covered because they're dragging Defenders around that's kind of the whole goal of any of these Sports is the
players without the ball are moving around to make space for other players that may be able to receive the ball in a better formation and so you can see
here now the eight and the nine have swapped again as the nine is maybe now run back towards the center the eight comes into the space they just vacated
and perhaps is now wide open because somebody didn't follow that run as I said before maybe the next set of attacking principles you can work on is
overlaps where now maybe that seven is taking a touch inside to the half space and now that eight is seeing that and triggering to make that run outside into
the wide area and around making a 2V1 so those are the sort of things that maybe after your first season of 9v9 for us I consider Four Seasons fall spring fall
spring we're done with our first quarter or our fall in the spring that's probably one of the two attacking principles that I'm going to look at to
help my players learn is now that we've been successful with playing the ball out wide and having depth in our attacks so width and depth now we can start to
work on some of these more more complicated attacking principles where now you're having to read and react like can overlap one of the other areas we'll talk about is playing through balls CU
that can be a difficult skill for these players to start to recognize when and where to play that ball and for the striker or the player in front of it the
trigger to go after so that might be the next two things in my list that I may work on lastly because we're trying to work on playing the ball out wide using
the width the corresponding piece of that is teaching the players in the middle what runs to make in the box and this is a really important concept
because you want to make sure that players are not running into each other spaces and at the same time making spaces for each other so a lot of times
commonly you'll have the striker move to the near post as you can see here and when they do that they drag Defenders with them which may make space for that
opposite eight to be coming in to the Penalty spot we have the other eight nearest to the ball on the strong side who's staying high for that pullback and
then you have that wide Winger coming in at the back post maybe looking for a back post tap in you can see here just the opposite picture the ball's on the
right we have those runs that are defined however you wanted to find them that's one of the things early on you work on you can work on at 9v9 if you're
using that wi is now getting that play So when you play that cross into the box it's not just a blindly kicking the ball into the box but that those players on
the outside have a rough idea where they might find a teammate whether they can look up over their shoulder or not and try and get that ball in and be
successful and trying to find somebody open again as we said it's those player movements dragging defenses around making sure that now players are coming into spaces that other players just
vacated so they're not all in the same place at the same time okay now for some fun stuff let's take a look at some of these game Clips
so we can see what it looks like in real life so this particular play is going to show a demonstration of how we're using the WID um along with support in the
middle of the field so we're going to play that ball out wide to my seven who's going to take a touch for some reason he turns around when he has
plenty of Cen clean grass in front of him and now he's going to cross the ball across and a back post finish we're going to bring this back in a second
we're going to take a look at this because what's interesting is where the goal scorer comes from okay so we're getting ourselves set up we're breaking out you can see the back three as we're
pushing up you see that player pushing out wide is now one of my eights has got their foot on the ball just behind the referee there's my seven he's a little
bit narrow hasn't got out there but the ultimate goal scorers that play are way out on the left my 11 way out there eventually he's the one that's going to
come all the way in from the backside so from one side of the field to the other the way this goal is scored so as we roll This forward can to play out here
by wide touch I don't know why he turns around but what he does he brings two Defenders to him then he gets down and around and then we plays that ball
across that wide 11 simple tap in for an easy goal at the back post let's take a look at another one all right in this example will start
with a corner kick okay here so when we're going to see we got the corner kick player there and we've got one of the eights have come over to support but
now take a look in the middle of the field here's our two center backs our six and even our keeper all up we made a nice diamond and that six is going to
become important in this goal this is an example of both wi and support because you're going to see ball retrieval happen twice where we outnumber the other team and then with support we're
able to get the ball from one player to another player for an easy pass into the back of the net so here we've had one retrieval by the six the ball goes out
wide we've got 2v2 and now the third player is coming over the Eight's coming over to support the wide player he helps take off the ball now as he plays it
into the striker the striker knows he doesn't have a shot he turns it actually the 11 on the far side of the field so we've gone from literally the seven to
the 11 again with of that play to score goal here's another example of using the width going from side to side with starting with a throwin over there with
my seven and he's going to play it into my eight who's going to take that ball he's going to drive down to the goal line he's dragging three Defenders with
him in the Box as you can see here we're going to label here comes the eight we see the eight with the three players around them but now in the Box there's
our Nine Dead Center in the middle of the goal we've got the 11 coming into the back post there and then at the top of the box having that depth to make
sure if anything goes wrong this is the eight waiting for this but the eight eight on the far side with the ball is just going to turn play this ball into
the box multiple options the nine makes a great finish here volley into the back of the net simple goal from wide back into the middle okay and this is last
example we're going to show how the shape with support around the ball wins the ball back from a goal kick which is as similar as if we lost the ball so
there's our back three you can even see my keeper standing up outside the box be support in case that ball does get through this is my 11 marking left side
they have two players way up at the center line but they've been taking these goal kicks all day and they can't get anywhere there's my nine shadowing
where the ball is we've got one eight over there the seven keeping their with and the other eight who will be part of this play in a minute is in that infield
position so we've got our shape we've got lots of support there's the ball they've been doing long goal kicks they can't play out of the back this is late
in the game and you're going to see what happens here he's going to attempt to play this ball it's a difficult ball to uh because a it's a long bouncing ball
at that player so even if they had the best of touches but this is fifth grade so look at that ball hits them right in the shin now look at this at this moment
is three green players converging on him right one two and three ultimately my Eight's going to win it my wide 11's going to pick it up and
now play it across to the player that's keeping with his opposite number the seven on the far side of the field and you see pass goes across it gets
deflected player gets a good touch and just sneaks that in on the inside of the post so another example of using the support to win the ball so I hope this video is useful for
you I hope that you could see where that translation to the clinical graphics on the screen how you lay it out in your head or you lay it out on the board and
how it starts to translate for your kids on the field where it's a lot Messier it's a little it's a more chaotic environment but as you progress through your 9v9 it's
using those principles of play using that width and depth and support to then unlock that creativity and that penetration to find ways through defenses to get yourselves in front of
goal for chances that's the key part of 9v9 7v7 and 11 v11 but that's where you are right now then this is what you can look at no matter what your formation
that you may be using I hope you found the video useful as I said before please I got some playlists down in the description subscribe if you haven't yet
uh really helps the channel if you uh recognize this t-shirt and this logo then uh you're in the special club with me comment down below if you want one of
these I know a guy I can probably hook you up uh so if you know you know otherwise till the next time we'll see you out in the fields thanks so much
bye-bye for
