0:05 hello again soccer coach KW here today we're going to do an overview of 7v7 organization on the field going to take a look at the one 1231 formation as it
0:16 moves up and down the field and we're going to talk about some key principles as you think about as a coach how you're going to coach your team going forward
0:24 how you're going to coach your team in defense all the different parts of the game in that formation and what the roles are for each of your players in
0:32 that structure so let's take a look at it we'll break it down now okay so let's look at the basic organization of the 7v7 using the 1231 uh if you didn't
0:41 watch my previous video going through a bunch of the different types of formations you might see and why this one might be the most balanced for you
0:48 to use and for your player's long-term development please go back and watch that one what's important to remember is that any formation you play is going to
0:56 be fluid as you start to begin to teach this to young players you're going to be more rigid in your positioning and in your structure and in your roles as you
1:06 gain experience and your team gains experience it's going to become much more fluid you can begin to morph players and roles in the game as they see fit and can start to Interchange
1:19 Flex with the with the game and the whatever's happening in the game but that comes with time and experience so beginning very structured very straightforward as they gain experience
1:31 much more fluid much more interchange much more flexible as you go so here's the basic shape of 1 two 31 as it would be if we had a goal kick it's important
1:42 to remember in 7v7 in most leagues that a the opposing team has can't be closer than what they call a buildout line in many leagues it's the halfway line
1:53 sometimes it's a line that's about halfway between the halfway line and your goal line but the point being is it gives your team a little space to work
2:01 with on goal kicks to help them learn how to play out of the back without somebody standing right on top of them they're young they're inexperienced with
2:11 that sort of pressure they would never really learn and they would just resort to kicking the ball long in addition most 7v7 leagues have a restriction that
2:20 from a goal kick or a punt you cannot kick the ball in the air over the halfway line or it's given to the other team on the halfway line as an indirect
2:29 free kick again encouraging teams to play the ball on the ground out from the back and that's what we want we want our players to be able to do that now so
2:39 that when they get to 9v9 and 11v 111 they have those important skills about how to handle the pass how to handle pressure how to handle making decisions
2:47 while they're playing out of the back with the ball in the ground because that is a big part of the full field and even 9v9 game you see we have a keeper we
2:57 have a ball in the center of the the goal area I'll always recommend on goal kicks you put the ball in the center not in either corner cuz that just
3:05 advertises what you're going to do our four and fives are just tucked inside the penalty area we'll call it the 18 because that's what it is on a fullsize
3:13 field on a 7v7 field it's about 14 but we're not going to get crazy right that's the 18 we have our eight parked in the middle of the field we have our
3:21 seven 11s out wide as well like to tell them getting paint on their boots paint on their shoes so far out there that they're on the sideline to make the
3:29 field nice and big we're looking for a nice angle between the five and the 11 or the four and the seven and then I nine is as far up as the other Defenders
3:38 will go if the other team is all parked on that Center Line then they can't go much further without being offside but if the other team keeps a couple of
3:48 center backs or something further up the field that nine can and should come across the halfway line because remember we're trying to stay on side but we're
3:56 also trying to stretch the field as wide as we so there is a concept in soccer that when you have the ball you try to make the field big your team should try to
4:08 spread out and use as much of the field as possible to make it difficult for teams to cover all the spaces that you want to operate in with the ball so you
4:17 can see here the eight happens to have the ball in the center of the field the seven and 11 are still plenty wide making big gaps big areas to play into
4:27 the nine could be a little bit further up but just because I had the graphics in the way that's what happened but they're looking for a space up forward
4:35 to get a pass forward and perhaps go One V one at a center back our four and five have pushed up the field but they have a
4:42 nice angle to the eight to support them so for example if the eight gets blocked off they can't go forward they could always turn play back to the five who
4:50 then has an easy ball out to the the wide player on the 11 so again we're trying to move up the field but we spread out but we're maintain
4:59 maintaining those angles of support and we're keeping our distances still while we're spread wide and we have some depth we're not so split apart that we can't
5:08 support each other the four and five aren't sitting inside the penalty area watching the attackers run off from them so again making that field big giving that width and the depth so that we have
5:20 options with the ball both left and right and forward and backwards so now here's an example the ball is in the attacking third of the field we've pushed all our players up
5:31 and you'll notice that now it looks like a one two 13 because now the Wingers have pushed all the way up with the striker ideally they wouldn't be in a
5:39 straight flat line but this is just for illustration they're going to be looking for some angles and maybe making some runs in behind the opposing team's Defenders uh as they get closer to the
5:50 goal but you'll notice that eight is behind the ball providing support for what happens in front of them early on that eight is going to keep running and
5:59 next thing you'll know they'll liter will be standing hand inand with the nine it will take some time but that's what's going on here you'll also notice
6:06 because the 11 has the ball the two center backs have slid over and the five is kind of behind the 11 to provide support to them and that's exactly what
6:16 we want to see is we want our center backs engaged in the attack in so much as that they're providing that outlet Backwoods pass if they get blocked off
6:26 if they get double teamed and they can't make a pass into the middle they can always find a teammate behind them which will almost always be uncovered where
6:34 then now they can play that ball into the nine or the eight or maybe they play it to the four and they swing around the other side so the four is still
6:43 patrolling the middle of the field probably the opposition Center back I mean uh attacker is in that area if they're a decent team and they're still providing cover there but everybody has
6:54 good support what we push forward also notice the goalkeeper you really have to work with your ERS to get them out of their goal when the ball is that far up
7:02 the field they need to get up and outside of their box to be a sweeper behind the defense let's say the 11 lose the ball and they just kick it forward
7:12 and now it's a foot race between the four and maybe a striker on the other team heading back if y keeper is sitting on their goal line in the back they
7:21 can't help that four in any way shape or form they're now just hoping that their Center back can outrace that Striker as they run towards that net but at this
7:30 starting position if the keeper is outside their box that ball goes over the top and there's some sort of foot race odds are that keeper is going to be
7:38 able to get to the ball before anybody else can and can safely knock it back up the field so you almost use them as a sweeper a sweeper keeper they sometimes
7:46 call them but it's important to get your Keepers to have the confidence to get up and out of the net they are also part of the attack they could be even much
7:56 further up the field believe it or not but at least getting themselves up out of the box to patrol that area to make sure that if a long ball gets just
8:04 booted down the other way they can get that ball and put it back into the attacking half of the field so that your team can continue the pressure uh going
8:12 in that direction here we have the converse we're now on the defense other team has the ball so now when we're on defense the idea is we want to make the field
8:24 small we want to be compact so that it's difficult for us another team to play through the middle of the field and get to the dangerous Parts which would be
8:33 obviously in front of our goal so you can see the four and the five have come in they're in a nice tight partnership the eight is there that triangle is
8:42 still there that eight acts as a screen to keep people from just walking in on the center backs and trying to split them the seven and 11 have tucked in and
8:50 the nine have stayed high it's important for your Striker to stay up the field they're so much going to want to run back and try and help their teammates
8:58 but the problem is if if your team team wins the ball back if your Striker's down with them they have nobody to pass the ball up to to relieve the pressure
9:07 you're just going to give the ball back to the other team whose center backs will be hanging out at the halfway line and they're going to knock it right back
9:14 at you while you're trying to get up and out of the field so it's really important to teach your Striker to stay up there it feels like they're doing
9:23 nothing and so their natural inclination is to try and come back into the goal area and defend you've got to train them to be like nope even if early on you
9:33 just tell them you can't leave The Circle at least that's a start and then as time goes on you can teach them they can be as far up the field as they need
9:42 to be while staying on Side and being an option for your team they're going he's going to or she's going to slide up and down the uh the line wherever the ball
9:50 is in the defense so if they win it they know if they just kick the ball straight up there's a chance that their stri will catch it the other piece of this is is
9:58 you're 7 and 11 are going to be the ones responsible to go out and Chase the ball out when it goes wide um in most formations like this the 7 and 11 are
10:06 basically 1 V one against their counterpart so they're going to spend most of the game attacking their matching wide midfielder or defending that wide midfielder because that's
10:18 their job up and down the field so their job is to chase out there but if the four or the five get pulled out of position the eight is in a great spot to
10:26 just slide in and restore a nice strong middle of the field so the 1 1231 is fluid as it moves up and down the field but those functions of the each player
10:36 in their roles really Define what's going on as the game goes up and down again when you have the ball you try to make the field big you spread out and
10:45 when you lose the ball you try to get compact around the ball and in the middle of your net in midle middle of the field to minimize the danger to your
10:55 net shots being taken from the center of the field and again as we've said teaching those roles associated with the numbering system that we talked about in
11:05 the other video just gives your players shorthand to know what they're doing at any one time so that's the basic 7v7 organization in the 1231 as a coach
11:17 having this information is vital so that you can conceptualize what's going to happen on the field and how you can have your game model move forward and backwards and you
11:30 can teach your players what to do in the different zones we're going to have a separate video on how you divide up the field and again that's more of a
11:37 conceptual concept for you as coach but you can use it in some concrete ways when you're teaching your players what to do when they're in the middle third
11:46 the defensive third or the attacking third and what the shape of your players and what their roles and responsibilities are in the system I hope you find that helpful breaking down
11:55 the 7v7 principles of organization there again that's an ideal situation the game is messy the game is chaotic it's never going to be as clean as the Grid on a
12:06 nice presentation but as a coach being able to think about how the game should look like as you go forward and as you come back in defense and how all those
12:16 positions relate are really helpful as you design sessions to help your players learn how to play in that system for two years to get better not just the
12:25 Tactical components but we haven't mentioned really probably even more important at this age grp is all the technical things that you need to do with these players to get them to learn
12:35 skills and we're going to talk plenty about that in the future but having that ability to marry the two together those technical skills of how to work with the
12:44 ball and then the tacnical knoow of when to use those skills because that's the thing that seems to get lost in a lot of soccer education for kids especially in
12:54 the United States is we have to get them technical we have to get them technical but we never teach them when to use those technical skills in the game and
13:03 so that's what we're trying to do here as a coach you getting the idea in your head as to how this works and how the players interact will help you when you
13:11 work on your technical exercises whether they're passing or dribbling or receiving or moving off the ball you can then relate it back to the game so the
13:19 kids can have a concrete idea of not only can I do this but when and why should I do this that's the ultimate goal here so I hope this is helpful
13:29 we'll see you real soon with another session until then thanks a lot subscribe like share with your other coaches that's super helpful and until next time I'll see you later
