Youth Soccer Ages & Stages: What Their Mind Is Ready For

Part of the series: The Big Picture, New to coaching? You can do it!

About this video

You planned a good session. You got to the field early, you put the cones out, you explained it twice. Ninety seconds in, it fell apart — and you drove home wondering whether they're not good enough, or you're not good enough. Nine times out of ten it's neither. The session just didn't match where those kids actually are. This is part one of two on ages and stages — the thing they teach you in an education degree and nobody teaches you in a coaching course. This video is the brain: what kids can think about, and who they can do it with. Part two is the body — physical development and maturation, and how differently it lands for girls and boys. Most coaches skip the brain and go straight to the body. I think that's the wrong order. You can't ignore how they learn before you start asking them to do things. Part 2 out Sept 21 - The Body: https://youtu.be/Fv_nJRMpSZA What's covered: The four developmental domains — cognitive, physical, social, maturation Why an 8-year-old sees themselves, the ball, and maybe one friend — and nothing past two The visual processing quirk that makes young kids flinch at a moving ball Parallel play — why sharing a ball at U8 is genuinely hard What changes at U10, U12 and U14, band by band Why boys compete to build community and girls need community before they'll compete Why the field and the team get bigger as they do 0:00 Kick-off — the session that fell apart 2:20 Why we don't teach calculus to a first grader 2:50 The 4 developmental domains 5:10 The age brackets 5:53 The visual processing quirk 7:35 Parallel play — why U8s can't share 7:50 U10 — the third player appears 9:01 Social development is tied to cognitive development 10:27 Boys compete to build community, girls need community to compete 11:00 U12 — switching the field, and the fear of looking bad 11:58 Windows of learning 12:47 U14 — identity and belonging 13:47 Why the field and the team get bigger 14:48 Next: the body USC Foundation of Coaching Online Course https://hub.unitedsoccercoaches.org/lightning-product-details?id=a1BPP000001sKSb2AM https://soccercoachkw.com Full Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHQkkm5iE_Xld9p49k7dlog?sub_confirmation=1 Buy an AI camera that doesn’t break the bank - and help out my town program at the same time! https://partner.reeplayer.com/soccercoachkw Join United Soccer Coaches: https://hub.unitedsoccercoaches.org/nc__createaccount?startURL=%2FNC__Login%3FstartUrl%3D%252FNC__joinrenew Amazon Coaching Items: Kwik Goal Digital Ball Pump: https://amzn.to/4blZmoK Small Tactics Board: https://amzn.to/48Ug0tP Small Magnets (Light): https://amzn.to/43iHk3S Small Magnets (Dark): https://amzn.to/3wUh6bM Big White Board: https://amzn.to/3x0NBoU Large Soccer Tactics Board: https://amzn.to/3VhzO7d Large Magnets: https://amzn.to/48RGiNv Large Magnets: https://amzn.to/3VfQxIc Waterproof Stickers: https://amzn.to/3Vfhn3b Folding Goals - High Quality: https://amzn.to/3AEITP7 How to Coach Girls https://amzn.to/4jNrsOC Are you coaching a girls team?
