0:00 hello coaches welcome back to another episode here today with Coach KW I'm going to talk now a little bit more practicalities about how to actually coach playing out of the back 7b7 my
0:11 last video we looked at real world examples of playing out of the back with third and fourth graders what works what didn't work in real game scenarios so
0:21 you can see that while this will look very clinical and so precise and everything looks so pristine we looked at it what's in all what it looks like
0:29 with real players is making decisions mistakes not being you know skilled socer players yet they're in third and fourth grade today I'm going to talk about how I coach it and when I coach it
0:41 and the things you can do to not only coach this technical concept of playing out of the back but how you then use it to apply a whole bunch of technical
0:52 skills that your players need in order to play the game they get to then work on those skills and see how they're applied in real game like situations
1:01 which I think is a huge missing part of Coach education here in the United States especially for Town players is marrying the technical ball skill players need to learn all these skills
1:13 with the ball but we don't do a great job at teaching them how and where to use those technical skills are on the field so you're going to see while my
1:24 session plan here is not anything that would be approved in a US soccer coaching course I feel like this is the best way at least that I have found to
1:33 do this and works the best for my players because it's very prescriptive you're telling and showing the players something step by step so they understand the concepts and then once
1:42 they've got that piece of it down you they can then slowly start to make it their own and be more decision-based and more player agency as they go forward so
1:52 let's take a look at this on the Whiteboard so here we have our typical one two 3 one position I just had to lay some new L lines down on my board
2:04 because I've worn them off with all the dragging around so we're talking about goal kicks here at the start but eventually what this really will head into is any time your keeper gets the
2:18 ball whether that is a save whether that's a back pass any situation where they've collected the ball this should be a trigger for the rest of your team
2:28 to as I like the say find their shap or assume the position right keeper has the ball that is a trigger for the rest of your team to get back into the
2:37 standardized formation so that you can restart the play in a way that gives you the most options in the game so first steps first on a goal kick I absolutely
2:49 insist that the ball is placed in the middle of the six-yard Box this whole thing of putting it on the corner a lot of coaches just think that's the rule
2:57 that's not the rule actually that ball could be any anywhere Inside the six-yard Box doesn't even have to be on the line you can put it on the goal line
3:04 for all the rules care but I put it in the middle of the six-yard Box why because it doesn't advertise our intentions before it happens if you
3:13 watch my last video you see we played a team and I showed you a couple examples where the keeper ped on one side of the other and my team knew exactly what was
3:21 going to go on and every time they did it we just won the ball right back because it was easy for us to figure out where to go and how to press them put
3:28 the ball in the middle start there and now it gives you the best option for any direction you want to go I take my center backs I place
3:38 them inside the 18 Maybe by you know a step or two three feet or so and down near the top of the six if your buildout line is like mine
3:49 and it's at the halfway line that's going to give them plenty of time for onrushing players although in a lot of 7v7 fields it's very much shortened and
3:58 so could be your basketball ball court practically if that's the case these players can drop even closer to the goal line to give themselves space in soccer
4:09 distance equals time and so if you can give yourself a little bit more distance you gain yourself a little bit more time now my Wingers are high and wide
4:20 and one of the things we tell them all the time is to get paint on their boots right they need to be so far wide that they're standing on the lines getting
4:28 paint on their shoes because they have a tendency to want to just kind of crowd in here we want to make the field as big as possible we push them out wide these
4:36 players are either going to have to come down the line to make a better passing angle to receive the ball here or if they're not pressed and they're not
4:43 covered they have the opportunity to just take that run and fly down the line for a pass in and behind your number eight wants to split the difference
4:51 between the top of the box and the center and you're nine you if you watch my last video you saw the frustration I have with this this team has to stay behind the line of
5:02 demarcation in my league which is the halfway line your league might have it here but this player doesn't have to stay on this side of the line I want
5:10 this player getting behind here into the space in front of the center backs so that if we get this ball out wide we're already bypassed a line of pressure and
5:20 we can play over or through in behind that backline and now we're attacking those center backs however many that this team plays with so we want them up
5:31 there so now for the coaching process I'll stand with the keeper and I'm very prescriptive and we go step by step I say this ball if it goes out to here to
5:43 this Center back what do you all do and now I instruct I want the eight to move over I want the seven to drop down the line I want the nine to slide over and
5:52 now I point out to them look at the diamond we have we have a direct shot perhaps to the nine especially when they get a little older and have more of a
6:00 foot or if it's a shorter field but now you've got some options we tell this player I want you to face forward and you receive the ball so that you can see
6:08 all the options and the other part I talk about in my uh playing uh the back 7v7 is the concept of I want these players here to wait until the second
6:19 pass before they do their next movement in most cases you'll see why in a second so now this player has this ball we've stopped we've talked to everybody
6:28 we've moved them they've shuffled it around we might go back and forth and make them rehearse it a couple times now this player has the ball now we say okay
6:36 your next first best pass is to play out here so now we play to the seven when when we play out wide here now we talk about second pass now you move this way
6:48 now you move this way now we're moving forward and now we're looking to make a decision or we're playing down the line are we playing into the center are we
6:56 taking our space as our eight supporting is our four in and behind are we moving forward we do all this motion and now we say to this player okay can you play
7:08 here yes play there can you play here because you can't play there sure okay great but what if you can't go forward so where's the backup well the play now
7:19 goes back this is now a trigger for everybody to start to reset because what I also tell my players is especially at this age two short pass passes are more
7:30 effective and safer than one long attempted pass especially in third grade this pass here could be 20 30 yards and you're playing Square across your field and if there's pressure here that's a
7:43 very inviting ball for somebody to pick off and be right in front so now what was telling them is nope you've got this ball you've turned you play back to your
7:50 keeper what's the trigger point for us to find our shape our keeper has the ball as soon as that happens everybody resets and finds position because now
8:00 this keeper should play this ball out to this now this player comes here we're sprinting over this way we're coming off this way and now we play up and we will
8:11 do this one pass at a time making sure everybody has the choreography down before we move on we'll shift our players around if I have multiple players if I have more than
8:22 seven players at a practice I will pair them up in multiple places and say the two of you were playing the same position move together then we rotate people around and we do
8:32 it again and again it's very static it's very prescribed but it's the only way they're going to learn this movement because they're not going to pick it up
8:43 on their own yes more experienced players maybe watching games on TV with people who are experienced and knowledgeable at the game at home they can pick this up and maybe see it
8:53 because this basic formation and shape watch a pro game you see them playing out of the back you're going to immediately recognize the bones of it it's really four five six players doing
9:04 this motion This Is Where It Starts we teach this here once we've learned the basic concepts now we start to add a little bit of game realism we'll take an
9:15 extra player in a penny now their job is the pressure of the ball so now we say go ahead play out to this side player comes along now they have to make a
9:23 decision these players move we we decide hey we want to play three passes so they play one two three before they play to the nine whatever it might be we stop we
9:34 talk about did everybody do what they were supposed to do do we do some self Corrections we bring the ball back we do it a few more times then we'll add a
9:43 second presser eventually we get the three at least and at this point this is one of the more effective and important games to play with your players on an
9:53 ongoing basis which is basically what I like to call a positional Rondo we're first practicing playing out of the back and now we've got real game likee
10:00 situation we got three players running in the ball comes in here we've got multiple players clogging up the space they can't play forwards and now they have to play back so now these players
10:09 happen to move and now you're really playing a game speed and learning how to do that as we've built pressure in over time so now the next piece of that is
10:18 now to do what I like to call I said a positional Rondo we are on the field we are in our positions and now we are playing a Rondo a keep away game player
10:28 in the middle but we have three players and now we're trying to play five passes 10 passes 15 passes while we're in our shape playing in the our own defensive
10:40 half of the field it's such a valuable game and skill because it's teaching them how to support how to find the spaces to find the gaps between players
10:52 how to support each other working on all those skills that will become super valuable later on because now you can take this drill and you can push it up
11:02 the field and now your keeper up and out of the box you're up here and now what you have is hey we can do this same possession game
11:13 when we've moved up and out of our area and we can't go forward or we want to own the ball and possess the ball and make the other team run around or maybe
11:22 you're playing a team we've played teams that are clumps you've ever played a team where like every it's almost like you8 soccer and they send four in
11:29 there's four or five players around the ball all the time it's super frustrating you can't dribble through it it looks like kindergarten sck all over again the
11:37 way to beat that is you move the ball and the way you move the ball is now you move it backwards around this Clump can only Chase for so long before they
11:45 completely worn out I have a a video example that I made for my town where my third grade team in their fall season playing on Turf and we don't have turf
11:56 had a team like this and in the first half we could not get the ball around because they kept running into a wall of four or five players literally
12:03 surrounding them on the play half timee we talked about hey remember we did this second half we were playing the ball all the way back to the keeper around and
12:12 through them and that's how we ended up scoring several goals because this team just started to give up chasing because it was too tiring the whole Clump moved
12:19 around the field but anyways using this as a possession-based exercise while in your shape is an excellent tool to use and I use it early on probably at least
12:32 once a week maybe even for both my practices for a little bit and as time goes on at least every other practice and then maybe in fourth grade it's a
12:40 little less than that although really it's a great warm-up when your team arrives if they should just get into a positional Rondo and they start playing keep away from each other but they're in
12:50 their shape they're just naturally rehearsing all the movements and steps and pieces and places that goes with that so let's talk about the technical components this so now that you're we've
13:01 taught all these things you say well that's great Kev but um my kids can't pass they can't receive well this is where you can integrate the Tactical
13:12 tactical piece of this with the technical and the first piece of this is body shape how they receive a ball there's a tendency for players to turn and look directly at the person who
13:23 has the ball with their back to the rest of the game and we all know that if you have your back to the rest of the field
13:28 you can't see see your options to pass and where the danger is coming from so the first thing we talk about here when we do this is having good body shape to
13:37 receive the ball which means these players should be facing inwards looking in this direction so they can receive this ball ball goes across their body to their far foot or their back foot
13:49 sometimes you heard that and if that happens now you naturally are now facing this direction so now you can see the danger that comes at you and you can see
13:58 all your options these players here they're out wide they're facing into the middle so they can turn their head and they can see the entire field 180
14:09 degrees on both sides this player here is always going to be a struggle because naturally they're going to want to plant themselves and look straight at the
14:15 keeper what can't they see the pressure that's coming right in behind them so you've really got to work on these players on their technical skill to find
14:25 their body shape if this ball goes out to this side they need to Pivot ground so that they're now looking in this direction so they can see the keeper
14:34 they can see the pressure and they can see the options so if the ball comes to them they're not surprised if the ball comes here they need to rotate
14:41 themselves around so that they're facing this way so they can see what's coming at them so passing receiving with good body shape scanning looking for the pressure when
14:54 the ball moves we're looking around when the ball's at a player we're looking at the player and if the player isn't moving the ball in any direction we're
15:02 checking as soon as that ball starts moving we're looking again all these are habits that take time to build but these are the technical skills that you can
15:11 work with your players while in this tactical formation and then you can get them to understand this is why we do it this is where we do it and this is how
15:21 we do it in terms of the team game it really integrates all those components into your practice um to really help develop your players again you've seen
15:31 some of my video examples playing back to the keeper all these things are important skill that needs to be taught right away at third grade because it
15:39 only benefits your team in the long run because it gives them the tools it's not you8 soccer where it's One Direction out of bounds One Direction out of bounds
15:49 back and forth like a basketball game that's not what you want you want these players to be comfortable that if they run into a wall they turn around and
15:56 play back the other way and try and go around the wall ball so that they maintain possession of the ball it's a great skill to have so I hope this will
16:05 give you some coaching ideas on how to coach this again it's very prescribed it's very step toep to begin with but you're learning choreography and then you slowly let them create their own
16:16 dance if you will once they've got the skills and the concepts and they get those positions in play you'll know when you've got this right because not only a
16:25 goal Kicks Will this start to happen but like I said if the ball goes goes back to the keeper or even to one of the center backs you'll start to see your
16:33 whole team trigger off of that motion and get into these positions because they know the ball's back here I need to get into my supportive positions so that
16:42 my team has the best chance of moving through with the ball I hope this is super helpful for you as you design your sessions to teach your kids if you have
16:50 any comments or questions please uh I I don't get a lot of comments on the videos I get a lot of views and I get a watches but not a lot of comments I have
16:57 another YouTube channel and deals with playing drums they're a far more chatty group there's a lot more comments and questions there so I'm kind of hoping that I can see some more in our chat as
17:07 well I love seeing those comments and questions again please subscribe if you can if you haven't it helps me and helps the channel share with your fellow
17:14 coaches and until next time I hope you are having either a great summer break or if you're watching this at some other time you find this useful for your team
17:22 and your coaching until next time I'll see you later bye e
