0:01 hello coaches coach KW here back again for number two of a three-part series of drills that you can use using a one basic setup and then use lots of
0:11 variations today we're going to work on the Y drill it's uh at its heart a pretty straightforward passing drill but you can use it in so many different ways
0:21 you can work on it for just passing and receiving you can work on for off the- ball movement you can work on turns you can work on up back and through you can
0:28 work on wall passes all within the same basic structure of one pretty easy to learn and lay out takes four cones at a minimum to do this
0:38 you can add in a dribbling component you can add in a finishing component can be used in a lot of different ways and it can be used from ages first and second
0:46 grade in the basic format all the way to my son's MLS next team uses it as their pregame activation and warmup so it can be used at any level and you players can
0:56 get something out of it so let's get into the basic layout in the animations we also have some video again from my winter footall sessions some live action of
1:06 some folks using some different variations of it and we'll get into how it's laid out how you can use it and hopefully it inspires you to think of
1:13 different ways you can use this drill so let's take a look now okay so at its basic setup you need three cones here and you can see where
1:23 you get the Y diagram name out of this because it's two high posts a middle and a bottom the bottom is where the line will start uh with extra players and
1:33 extra balls and then we're going to start with placing a player behind each cone now as always each cone represents a Defender and we're going to use that
1:42 when we're working on off the ball movement to get our players to move away from or check away from their markers before the drill starts so when the drill starts the
1:53 player at the bottom is going to play a pass to that Central player who checks away from the cone they then themselves check away from their starting position
2:01 then play the long pass out to the player on the right who then dribbles the ball back down and the other players follow their passes and take the new
2:09 space now we're go on the other side and on this side we're going to ask our players to work on our left feet so we're playing that ball off to the left
2:16 side receiving on the left playing the long pass it's an up back and through and then the player dribbles their way back down it's pretty straightforward to get into the Rhythm
2:27 and if you need to you can just take away one of the top cones and just work on one side and then switch to the other if you really want to break it down
2:35 easily the sometimes it's handy to have a coach stand behind that middle cone and just remind the players whether they're going to the right or the left
2:43 they sometimes forget because they're just not paying attention but that's an easy fix to do in the practice so you can see it's a pretty straightforward drill doesn't take a lot of setup maybe
2:55 what might be helpful early on is positioning a coach behind the central player to help remind them which side of the why they're going to because they
3:04 tend to forget for some reason and that's okay so you just have somebody standing left pointing literally left and right but this drill just by itself works on short and longer passing
3:15 receiving with that outside foot checking away from a Defender lots of basic passing and receiving skills in this one very simple straightforward piece and now there's just so many more
3:27 other things that we can do to work with this but it's also work a basic attacking principle of up back and through or the third man run where you
3:35 play that pass in get a bounce pass back and that then activates a wide player or another player to stop making a run and now you make the longer pass we're going
3:44 to show you how this looks in formation as well so you can see that you can relate this back to the game so that the kids understand it's not just a passing
3:56 pattern around cones but it's also a structure they can use to make some basic attacking moves let's take a look at a few other variations in this version we're not now
4:05 going to do up back and through but we're just going to have the player turn and face and play the pass to the outside player so you can see same start
4:15 but now the central player receives that ball in half turn turn plays it to the far player and then they rotate in and then we repeat on the other side so now
4:24 it's a little bit more linear but now we're working on playing on the turn receiving on the turn and making that pass quickly and out to the other player
4:33 so again same basic setup just a different skill that we're working on on that Central player okay in this variation we're going to have the same setup but now we're going to add a one
4:44 two at the top of the Y so now we're going to be working on two different passing combinations an up back and through and a onew or a wall pass up at
4:52 the top so starts the same short pass to the middle check away check away again make the long pass or receive with the outside foot but now you're going to try
5:02 and play a onew and time that run around that cone as the player comes down the animation isn't as smooth as you would do it obviously that run would be
5:11 nonstop and ideally it's a one touch around the cone to play that one two but now we've added a little bit more complexity a little bit more timing a
5:22 little bit more skill work here for players who can handle it and now we've introduced a onew around the cone as we play through the cycle okay in this example we're going to add
5:32 a cone and a net at the top of the screen excuse the cone flying in from the side when the animation starts but now we're going to
5:40 combine playing with the up back and through with a turn and combining this and turning this into a pattern of play that you might see in the final third or
5:49 the middle third into the final third trying to make an attacking move so now as we play that turn up back and through now the player is going to play a
5:57 through ball to that player who is timed their run who goes in on that they take a shot and because we started on the right everybody's going to follow the
6:05 pass Andor rotate clockwise now we're going to go up the other side and it's the same thing we're going to play that pass it's going to come back it's going
6:13 to go out to this wide player who's going to make the turn on the half turn play to that forward player who then plays the ball back now the right sided
6:21 player is going to make that timed run off their man in to take a shot so it's very much an attacking pattern into into play using the basic setup that we've
6:32 just now expanded into another role so now here we are in our set up for a goal kick and now we can relate that very first variation of the drill
6:41 to what we do in a goal kick when we play to the eight first then drop the ball out to one of the center backs who then looks for one of the wide players
6:49 to have made a move in and out that is an up back and through classically and it's exactly the Motions that we reinforced during that first version of
6:58 the drill early on so it's a way to practice those skills the reception the pass the weight of the pass in a controlled environment and now you can
7:07 take it and show your players look this is exactly what we do when we do this sort of playing out of the back on a center back move uh for a goal kick
7:17 really relatable here's a slightly more convoluted example in the game but it's the same sort of concept we're moving the ball up the field we're playing through the eight we're playing upbs and
7:27 throughs to move that ball to drive pressure to different parts of the field if this was an attacking move my team was able to pull off in the game I'd be
7:35 so happy just because they were using all those principles to do things like moving the ball to move the other team around to find gaps in the other team's
7:45 defense by moving that ball quickly all those movements we just did in that wide drill so here's a diagram of a little bit more complicated we've combined a
7:55 whole bunch of different things here and we could flip with those yellow cones on the side are to put them up at the top of the field along with the Nets but
8:03 basically you can turn this into a multi-functional drill where you can do the wide pattern and then as those wide players return back to the line you can
8:13 have them dribble the cones and have them do certain moves around the cones whether it's just agility work with the ball or specific 1V one moves and then
8:20 you can have them finish by shooting on either a big goal or two smaller goals So within one drill you can really work on a whole bunch of different activities
8:30 and a bunch of different activations if you wanted to do this as a warm-up before a game or this would be a great warm-up drill and eval drill to do in a
8:39 tryy out because you can watch a player do all the different basic movements that you might want to see a player execute can they pass can they receive
8:48 are they aware of moving on and off the ball can they dribble the ball in a tight space and can they strike the ball at goal really a great all-in-one
8:56 combination that you can do as a warm-up as a triy out drill or as an activation um again just using that basic setup and adding and subtracting parts to it all
9:06 right so here's a liveaction variation the only difference here is the basic why is there you can see the yellow dot near the center circle but I've added
9:14 two additional cones so basically I've added two more starting points on the map and you can see here that it makes the application of this actually go a
9:24 little bit quicker uh because now you have no you're not waiting for that play to run up move you've got somebody waiting to go so here's another idea but
9:33 you can see here the players are dribbling down the sides going through a cone weave and then they're taking a shot at the far mat which represents our
9:41 goal so here's just another way that you can use this drill to do some different things with it so I hope you can see how this wide passing drill is again another
9:49 one of these drills that with there some basic setup you can use it in almost infinite ways to train your team on a whole bunch of Technical and tactical
9:56 pieces and you can see how those movements can be translated into game actions where you can now take this drill and now take it your team onto the
10:05 field and kind of show them hey that thing we just did with the cones now look what it looks like when we're passing from a center back to a center
10:12 mid and back and out wide or however combinations that we showed again really try to connect the training environment and the drill to the Tactical game situation so you players get to
10:24 understand that this isn't just a exercise that you're making them do around cones but it's something that will can be used within the game I hope you find this useful I hope you will
10:35 share this and hit that subscribe button need more subscribers that'd be super helpful I get tons of views I love it but more subscribers would be helpful if
10:43 you have any other ideas for drills that are sort of um Universal if you will I'd love to hear them in the comments and take a look at them uh it's just one way
10:52 of coaching but again I think it's important to have different ways of doing these things I don't subscribe to anyone philosophy of coaching um it's whatever gets the job done because there
11:02 are good points for all the different ways that one can organize a session it just depends on the age of the player the qualities of the players the
11:11 abilities of the players the experience of the players all really matters on what and how you might deliver a session I'm not wedded to one particular methodology because um I think I can
11:22 take the best from all and use them when it's the right approach and I hope that you think the same too so until next time we'll see you soon out in the
11:28 fields thanks a lot bye
